Adventure Tips

Carry sturdy, waterproof footwear

Trails can be wet and slippery from frequent rainfall; proper footwear provides traction and foot protection.

Bring insect repellent

The lush rainforest environment hosts many insects—repellent helps keep bites at bay during hikes.

Stay hydrated

Though the forest is humid, walking several hours requires regular water intake to maintain energy and focus.

Respect local flora and fauna

Avoid disturbing plants and animals and stay on marked trails to protect El Yunque’s delicate ecosystem.

Local Insights

Wildlife

  • Puerto Rican coquí – a tiny frog endemic to the island whose calls fill the forest.
  • The Puerto Rican parrot, one of the rarest birds in the world, occasionally spotted in remote areas.

History

El Yunque was established as a national forest in 1903, making it the oldest protected forest in the U.S. National Forest System with ties to the indigenous Taíno people.

Conservation

Sustainable tourism practices are encouraged to preserve El Yunque’s fragile ecosystem, emphasizing use of marked trails and minimal waste.
