Low aerobic demand but expect jostling and getting in/out; suitable for most who can handle bumpy terrain.
Take the wheel and carve a two-hour off-road loop from Arcos de Valdevez into Peneda-Gerês. Expect 35 km of mixed terrain, panoramic ridgelines, seasonal mud, and close wildlife sightings—all in a driver-led CFMoto buggy.
The engine coughs to life, a low animal sound that promises mischief. You steer the buggy out of the staging area and the asphalt gives way to rutted tracks, green hands of laurel and oak brushing the roll cage as the machine threads through the mountain. The trail climbs—steep pins of rock and fern-slick roots—and at 800 meters the valley suddenly opens: a wide green bowl, a patchwork of chestnut groves and terraced fields, and beyond them the Atlantic narrowing into a silver line.

A valid car driver’s license and photo ID are mandatory; you’ll also need a bank card for a refundable €300 deposit per vehicle.
Wear quick-drying layers and shoes you don’t mind dirty—much of the year includes mud and water crossings.
Maintain a safe distance, control your speed on descents, and follow the instructor’s briefing—drivers are responsible for vehicle damage.
The operator cancels in bad weather; arrive early—check-in closes 10 minutes after start time.
Peneda-Gerês was established as Portugal’s only national park in 1971; human habitation here includes ancient granaries and medieval shepherd routes.
Stay on designated tracks, avoid feeding wildlife, and follow the provider’s guidance to reduce erosion and disturbance to grazing animals.
