Newcastle Highlights encompasses a range of habitats. Shorebirds, bush birds and swamps are the go to locations on this tour. We start early to get the full benefit of the sunrise at the Ourimbah rest stop where we can see the Bassian Thrush and Regent Bowerbird.
Then we head to the coastal tides at Stockton Sandspit for migratory curlew, whimbrel and plovers.
All within an easy driving distance, we head to Ash Island for its variety of habitats - mangroves, open marshes and bush.
Hunter Wetlands is close by and is a delightful location for lunch and spotting birds on the ponds and amongst the reeds.
Hexham Swamp is last and has more wetlands. Swamp Harriers, Hobby and White-bellied Sea Eagle are seen here.
