About

The Vale do Vouga line, better known as the Vouga line and nicknamed the Vale das Voltas line, in reference to its winding route, was a railway section that connected the North line to the Dão line, over a length of 140 km.

It began to be planned in 1877 with the aim of transporting the abundant agricultural production from the Vouga valley to Greater Porto, and was finally inaugurated on February 5, 1914, establishing the long-awaited railway connection between Espinho and Viseu.

The first trains that served the Vouga line were steam locomotives, with wooden wagons and carriages. Later, the line was served by railcars, a situation that continued until its deactivation in 1990 (between Sernada do Vouga and Viseu). It remains in memory as one of the most beautiful railway lines in Portugal, rising from the coast to the mountains in a journey of curves, tunnels and bridges, cutting through valleys and hills of luxuriant green on the rise.

This bike tour invites participants to cover approximately 65 km, descending through a combination of farmland, vineyards, oak trees and fabulous views over the Vouga River Valley and its end in Sernada do Vouga.

After pickup in Coimbra, by car, we head to the city of Viseu to the beginning of the route, where they continue by bike and we will accompany them along its entire length.

At the end, we will be waiting for you, to bring you back to Coimbra.
