For your comfort, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad recommends that you consider the following when planning your trip:
COACHES ARE NOT HEATED.
Temperatures can vary greatly between the train ride and the hike, so dress in moisture-wicking layers.
Hydration is crucial, especially at higher elevations and during physical activity.
Rough terrain along the Continental Divide calls for supportive, durable footwear.
Open-air gondola cars and exposed trails mean strong sun; bring sunscreen and a hat.
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad preserves one of the last remaining narrow-gauge steam railroads that served the American West in the late 19th century.
Efforts focus on protecting the fragile high-altitude ecosystem by encouraging Leave No Trace principles and limiting train passenger numbers.
Provides ankle support and traction for varied mountain terrain.
Keeps you hydrated during your hike and train journey.
Allows you to adjust to temperature changes throughout the day.
Protects your skin during exposed portions of the hike and train ride.
