10–11 hours
Suitable for most people with basic mobility; you should be comfortable walking short sections on uneven ground and climbing low rocks.
A full-day private tour from Christchurch that pairs the otherworldly limestone boulders of Kura Tawhiti / Castle Hill with the alpine drama of Arthur’s Pass and Punchbowl Falls. Ideal for photographers, LOTR fans, and anyone short on time but hungry for big South Island scenery.
Morning light breaks over the Canterbury plains and the coach slips west, the concrete city shrinking behind travelers as mountains grow in the windshield. By mid-morning the bus turns onto a narrow road and the landscape changes: tussock grass gives way to grey limestone giants, a field of boulders that look as if a giant hand scattered them there. At Kura Tawhiti / Castle Hill, those stone sculptures dominate the skyline—surreal, angular forms that made Peter Jackson’s production designers smile and that dare visitors to climb, frame, and linger.

The Castle Hill boulders and Punchbowl track are uneven and can be slippery—trail runners or hiking boots with good tread make scrambling and short walks safer.
Mountain weather changes quickly; a lightweight rain shell keeps you dry during sudden showers and spray from Punchbowl Falls.
The day is long (10–11 hours) and stops are limited—pack at least 1–2 liters of water and energy snacks to stay fueled.
Golden light on the boulders and the falls’ mist create dramatic shots—bring spare battery/storage and a small tripod if you shoot long exposures.
Kura Tawhiti / Castle Hill holds significance for local iwi and is also famous as a film location for The Lord of the Rings; Arthur’s Pass developed around mountain routes used by early travellers and stock drovers.
Both sites are managed with a focus on protecting fragile alpine ecosystems—stay on marked tracks, pack out waste, and avoid disturbing nesting birds and vegetation.
Provide traction on limestone boulders and the uneven Punchbowl track.
Protects against mountain rain, wind, and falls’ spray.
