The bus climbs out of Sydney before dawn, headlights winking off the eucalypts as the city blurs behind you. By the time the sun lifts over the rim of the Jamison Valley, the Blue Mountains have a different gravity—the air cooler, the cliffs sharper, the valley below pushing a slow green tide of forest. You step off at Scenic World and the world tilts: the Scenic Railway drops almost vertically into the rainforest, the Skyway slides over Katoomba Falls, and the valley opens like something ancient and deliberate.

Adventure Tips

Layer for mountain weather

Temperatures drop quickly on the escarpment—carry a windproof midlayer and a light waterproof to stay comfortable on lookouts and valley walks.

Sturdy shoes only

Walks include uneven rock, mud and steps—closed-toe hiking or trail shoes with good grip prevent slips on wet boardwalks.

Bring refillable water

Carry at least 1–1.5 liters; water is limited on short walks and you’ll be outside for most of the day.

Charge your camera early

Battery drains fast with repeated Skyline and Skyway shots—bring a spare battery or power bank for your phone.
