Suitable for most people in basic physical condition; ability to mount a two-person ATV and tolerate wind is required.
Ride across lava fields, spot thousands of puffins, and stand on the rim of a volcano on Heimaey. This 1 hour 45 minute ATV tour combines off-road thrills with accessible wildlife viewing and local volcanic history.
You climb onto the ATV as wind from the open Atlantic pushes against your jacket — Heimaey is never still. The ride begins south along a ragged coastline where basalt cliffs throw back the sea and a rock outcrop known simply as "the elephant" juts like a watchful prow. Guides steer the group toward Stórhöfði, where puffins wheel in tight arcs and the view can, on a clear day, stretch all the way to Surtsey, the tiny island birthed in 1963 by a submarine eruption.

Stórhöfði is very windy and temperatures fluctuate; a windproof shell and warm mid-layer keep you comfortable during coastal stops.
Use a wrist or neck strap and a small protective bag—salt spray and sudden gusts are common near the cliffs.
Anyone who wants to drive an ATV must bring a valid driving license; passengers must be 6 years or older.
Puffin colonies are fragile—stay on designated paths and follow the guide’s instructions to avoid disturbing birds.
Eldfell erupted in 1973, forcing a partial evacuation and creating new land; Surtsey formed in a 1963 submarine eruption nearby.
Puffin colonies are sensitive to disturbance—stay on paths and follow guide instructions; avoid feeding wildlife and pack out all trash.
Blocks wind and spray during coastal stretches and keeps you dry when weather turns.
spring specific
Traps heat between the shell and base layer for comfort on cold, windy stops.
fall specific
Good traction and protection for getting on/off the ATV and walking short uneven sections.
summer specific
Bring a zoom (200–400mm ideal) for puffin close-ups without approaching nesting slopes.
