Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of indigo dyeing at Hopsewee Plantation, the historic home of Thomas Lynch, Sr. Discover the art of creating beautiful designs on bandanas and tea towels using all-natural indigo. This hands-on workshop combines history, creativity, and nature for a truly memorable experience.
• Learn about indigo here at the home of indigo baron and Winyah Indigo Society’s first president, Thomas Lynch, Sr.! • Used for the distinctive blue British uniform, indigo was South Carolina’s first cash crop • All-natural indigo dyeing basics are covered as you create a bandana and tea towel to take home • Various wrapping & dyeing techniques will be demonstrated • Items to be dyed and all other materials necessary to create different designs will be provided
• Skill Level Beginner & Intermediate • Classes are weather permitting and may be rescheduled • Please note this class takes place partially outdoors • Please wear old clothes and closed-toe shoes • Bring long latex or rubber gloves if you have them • Workshop is non-refundable and limited to 10 students • Minimum class size is 4; if minimum is not met, then class will be rescheduled

• Please wear old clothes and closed-toe shoes • Bring long latex or rubber gloves if you have them; disposable ones will be provided if you don't have your own • The plantation is located in a beautiful natural setting, which unfortunately includes mosquitoes. We do spray for mosquitoes regularly, but insect repellent is helpful for those who are sensitive.
Indigo dye can cause permanent stains, so dress accordingly or bring a smock.
Spend time outdoors during the workshop, so bring sunscreen and a hat to stay protected.
Hopsewee Plantation has limited parking; arriving early ensures you get a close spot.
Bring a water bottle to keep hydrated especially on warm days during the workshop.
