4 Hours 5.5 Miles Roundtrip
Come join us on private tour for a stunning 5.5-mile roundtrip hike! Enjoy connecting with the guide and the wilderness of Southeast Alaska. Hike an improved gravel trail alongside a forested lake below a mountain. Plenty of spots for picture taking. From there, the second mile’s more natural tread is mixed with gravel, large rocks, and roots as you ascend through an old-growth rainforest displaying large specimens of Sitka spruce.
Learn about some of our flora and fauna and hear about our complicated logging history and what it means for our future. Learn how to protect our endangered old-growth forests.
At 1100 feet of elevation, you arrive at the bottom of an avalanche chute. The next 3/4 of a mile ascends another 550 feet to a panoramic alpine overlook at 1650 feet, our destination. Be one of only two tours a day allowed on this cherished trail.
This hike can be considered strenuous and is for those who are in relatively good shape and enjoy exercise and have experience hiking up elevated, uneven terrain, including large boulder steps and small stream crossings where one may or may not get wet feet depending on the season’s snow melt and/or rainfall. This tour will require a consistent moderate pace. Not recommended for those who lead mostly a sedentary life or who have health or balance issues or injuries. Depending on guests' paces, no guarantee that we make our destination as there will be a hard turn-around time regardless of where we are on the trail. This tour also is not permitted to go to the top of the mountain.
Duration: 4 Hours. Tour times below are approximate: 15 minutes: Drive to trailhead 1 hour: Hike to the avalanche chute 45 minutes: Hike to alpine overlook 15 minutes: Enjoy the overlook 1 hour & 30 minutes: Hike back down to vehicle 15 minutes: Drive back to berth 3

This is a leave-no-trace excursion, including no littering or food left behind. This is also a tobacco-free, drug-free, and alcohol-free excursion.
