About this landmark
Dramatic Coastal Rock Formations & Thridrangar Lighthouse, Southern Iceland
Located off the southern coast of Iceland near the Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands), Thridrangar Lighthouse stands atop a towering sea stack that rises sharply from the North Atlantic waves. This remote landmark is famous for its three striking volcanic rock pillars, of which the tallest supports the lighthouse. These basalt sea stacks showcase Iceland’s volcanic origins and powerful ocean erosion sculpting the rugged coastline. Surrounded by crashing waves and open water, Thridrangar offers a spectacular glimpse into nature’s raw, untamed forces.
The lighthouse itself, built in 1939, clings to the highest rock pinnacle named Háidrangur—or High Rock—rising about 120 meters (390 feet) above the sea. It’s notable for being extremely challenging to access, reachable only by helicopter or boat in rare conditions. The area’s unique geology includes volcanic basalt columns and the sharp angle of the stacks makes for a visually impressive and dramatic seascape. This stark natural monument sits about 10 kilometers west of the main islands, emphasizing Iceland’s reputation for wild, hard-to-reach places that captivate outdoor lovers and photographers alike.
Local legend and history surround the towering rocks and lighthouse, underscoring human resilience amid nature’s vast power. This spot is emblematic of southern Iceland’s coastal wilderness where land meets an untiring ocean current. People appreciate Thridrangar for its visual drama and the impressive engineering feat of placing a lighthouse high on these jagged columns, even if a visit requires planning and daring.
