Prairie Ridge Golf Course
Prairie Ridge Golf Course in Box Elder, South Dakota, offers an 18-hole public layout defined by open prairie terrain and fast, sun-kissed greens. Its affordable play and straightforward course design make it a practical choice for golfers of varied skill levels seeking a crisp, wind-influenced challenge near Rapid City.
Course Overview
Prairie Ridge Golf Course offers an accessible and engaging 18-hole public layout situated in Box Elder, South Dakota, just a short drive from Rapid City. This modest yet spirited course delivers a straightforward golfing experience shaped by its prairie environment. The terrain is generally flat with minimal tree coverage, which means the sun often dominates both the fairways and the fast-paced greens. Golfers should expect a game that challenges precision and creativity rather than power, as the course’s design places emphasis on shot control and strategic play.
The course presents a compact footprint, with holes positioned close together, a feature that contributes to quick pace of play and a social, connected atmosphere on the course. This proximity calls for players to maintain awareness, especially during busier times when groups may be advancing on near-adjacent holes. The lack of extensive tree lines or natural elevation changes means wind conditions frequently come into play, testing club selection and stroke consistency.
Prairie Ridge appeals mainly to golfers seeking an affordable and approachable venue within the Rapid City region. It suits beginners and intermediate players well, with scoring opportunities balanced by the challenge of fast greens that are exposed to the elements and can be tricky to read. More experienced players will find value in the mental game that this open setting demands, particularly in the latter holes.
Amenities at Prairie Ridge include a modest clubhouse and dining options known locally for generous portions and quality fare, making it a convenient spot to relax after a round. Though the course does not currently offer additional nine holes, longtime patrons recall conversations about expansion that never materialized. Walking is permitted, but players should prepare for exposed sun exposure and wear appropriate footwear for firm turf.
For those familiar with courses in the Rapid City area, Prairie Ridge provides a refreshing, no-frills alternative that combines affordability with a consistent playing surface. Its public status and central location make it a practical choice for those looking to fit in a round without venturing far from town. The open landscape makes every club choice feel deliberate, inviting a thoughtful approach to the game that rewards patience and strategic execution.
Course Highlights
The course features fast, firm greens exposed to the open prairie winds, which test putting skills and club selection. The tight layout places holes in close proximity, encouraging a communal feel but requiring careful attention to pace and safety. Although modest in elevation change, the course’s simplicity highlights shot control and strategic play over distance.

This is an awesome place to eat. The food is delicious and the service is great. We didn't golf but it looks like a nice course. This place is closed now.

Don’t try to take your kids with you. They won’t let family ride along with you.

It's a nice little course for Box Elder SD, and it does provide plenty of challenges throughout the course. The downside is with the course being in a small space. The holes are right next to each other. Plus, the greens tend to bake in the sun due to little coverage, making them super fast and tough to read at times. Overall, though, for the price you pay, it's hard to beat especially with all the courses in Rapid City being usually higher in price.

My family and I lived in Rapid City between 2001 and 2013, and during this time, we got to play at every golf course that the city has to offer, to include the ones outside of town. Prairie Ridge Golf Course will always be special for us because we've golfed here so many times with friends and co-workers. The one thing that was frustrating throughout my time playing here is I've always heard rumors from the base that they were going to add on a second 9-hole course, but obviously nothing was executed and it was just all lip service. If the course added another 9-hole course, then I would definitely fly back to try it out. I know it's been a while since my last visit and some of the folks who worked here may not be around anymore, but the staff were always phenomenal. I recall the cost to play here was very reasonable, to include the annual memberships for both green fees and USGA GHIN handicap service. Like I mentioned before, I'm not sure what service is available to the public these days since it's been a while for me golfing here, I just know the over experience is great. Thanks for all the memories.

The quality and portions are great. We ordered Pulled Pork Nachos with homemade kettle chips that were fantastic! You'll spend approximately $50 for a dinner for two before the tip, but again, portions make this a good deal. This restaurant is on the road heading towards the main gate at Ellsworth AFB in Box Elder, SD.

The course is in pretty good shape. The staff are rude and the price is really high for what is an ok muni course at best.
