Prairie Ridge Golf Course
Prairie Ridge Golf Course delivers a straightforward yet challenging 18-hole experience on South Dakota’s plains. With tight fairways and fast, sun-baked greens, this public course offers a test of precision and strategy ideal for players valuing honest, unpretentious golf.
Course Overview
Prairie Ridge Golf Course in Box Elder, South Dakota offers an accessible and straightforward golfing experience that appeals to players seeking solid challenges without the frills of large-scale resort courses. This 18-hole layout is compact and thoughtfully arranged within limited grounds, presenting tight fairways that demand accuracy and greens that test putting skills in direct sunlight. The open landscape leaves little room for shade, which means golfers face fast, firm greens frequently exposed to the elements, encouraging a strategic approach to both short and long games.
Designed as a public facility, Prairie Ridge welcomes players of various skill levels who appreciate an honest, no-nonsense round. The course’s intimate footprint places holes in close proximity to one another, creating a bustling atmosphere where players can feel the pulse of the game across the property. For those mindful of pace of play, the course’s layout supports brisk rounds, while its variety of holes requires focus and thoughtful shot-making.
Set against the subtle backdrop of rolling plains and the expansive South Dakota skies, the course frames rounds with wide-open vistas rather than dense forests or dramatic elevation changes. The terrain itself is generally flat, with strategic bunkering positioned to guard key landing areas and greens, forcing golfers to weigh risk and reward on nearly every hole. The elevation plays a minimal role, but the prevailing winds contribute a natural challenge that influences club selection and shot shape.
Amenities include a clubhouse with dining options popular among locals, known for generous portions and homestyle fare. While the staff is known for their welcoming attitude, the course’s public nature ensures a relaxed environment where golf remains the primary focus. Visitors should prepare for summer conditions by bringing appropriate sun protection and water, as shade is limited.
Prairie Ridge is ideal for players seeking a solid round that emphasizes fundamental shotmaking without the gimmicks of overly designed courses. Those looking for affordability combined with a course that rewards precision and mental engagement will find something worthwhile here. Whether local enthusiast or traveler passing through, Prairie Ridge offers a clear, practical golf experience rooted in earnest play and accessible fun.

This is an awesome place to eat. The food is delicious and the service is great. We didn't golf but it looks like a nice course. This place is closed now.

It's a nice little course for Box Elder SD, and it does provide plenty of challenges throughout the course. The downside is with the course being in a small space. The holes are right next to each other. Plus, the greens tend to bake in the sun due to little coverage, making them super fast and tough to read at times. Overall, though, for the price you pay, it's hard to beat especially with all the courses in Rapid City being usually higher in price.

My family and I lived in Rapid City between 2001 and 2013, and during this time, we got to play at every golf course that the city has to offer, to include the ones outside of town. Prairie Ridge Golf Course will always be special for us because we've golfed here so many times with friends and co-workers. The one thing that was frustrating throughout my time playing here is I've always heard rumors from the base that they were going to add on a second 9-hole course, but obviously nothing was executed and it was just all lip service. If the course added another 9-hole course, then I would definitely fly back to try it out. I know it's been a while since my last visit and some of the folks who worked here may not be around anymore, but the staff were always phenomenal. I recall the cost to play here was very reasonable, to include the annual memberships for both green fees and USGA GHIN handicap service. Like I mentioned before, I'm not sure what service is available to the public these days since it's been a while for me golfing here, I just know the over experience is great. Thanks for all the memories.

The quality and portions are great. We ordered Pulled Pork Nachos with homemade kettle chips that were fantastic! You'll spend approximately $50 for a dinner for two before the tip, but again, portions make this a good deal. This restaurant is on the road heading towards the main gate at Ellsworth AFB in Box Elder, SD.

The course is in pretty good shape. The staff are rude and the price is really high for what is an ok muni course at best.
