Course Overview
Established as a public course that invites golfers of all skill levels, University of Montana Golf Course offers an 18-hole challenge set against the backdrop of mature trees and natural Montana landscapes. Located just off South Avenue E in Missoula, this approachable layout combines straightforward playability with moments that test precision and strategy. The gentle elevation changes and tree-lined fairways create a balance between open shots and navigation around nature’s natural defenses.
The course’s design embraces its setting—wide enough to satisfy those newer to the game, yet layered with enough complexity for more experienced players seeking to sharpen their creativity. Fairways are generous but guarded by occasional slopes and tall native grasses, making missed shots a reminder to focus on accuracy. The greens show subtle undulations, encouraging controlled approach shots and careful reading to avoid tricky three-putts.
Its friendly atmosphere is a notable feature, reflecting in the staff’s welcoming approach, which helps ease beginners while supporting dedicated players looking for a reliable, well-maintained venue. The short game areas and driving range add value for those aiming to practice shots and warm up before play.
Golfers should plan for a reasonable pace of play, especially on busy mornings and weekends when the course comes alive with local enthusiasts. Walking is feasible, though the presence of gentle slopes around several holes makes comfortable footwear and a bit of stamina advisable. Carts are available and recommended for those seeking a relaxed round, particularly in warmer months.
While the layout might not boast dramatic signature holes, its charm lies in the consistent quality of each tee-to-green experience, with tree clusters that challenge trajectory and greens that respond keenly to touch.
Whether playing a casual round or honing competitive skills, University of Montana Golf Course provides a solid test within an accessible setting. It remains a favorite local spot where the pace of play, course condition, and natural Montana spirit combine to produce rounds worth repeating.

Great, easy going atmosphere. But don't come for fast play. The course is harder than you think. Very mature trees, but it's been around forever.

We have golfed here just about every Friday morning before work since opening this season, and I can honestly say its one of my favorite places to play for a "home course" Since opening the greens team has made substantial progress on getting this course to look and play as well as it does. Staff is friendly and accommodating, and prices are extremely fair. Pace can be slow at times, but it is to be expected on a public course. Bravo to all involved in making this season exceptional. I look forward to many more fun rounds here!

Pretty dope place, the driving range is cheap so you can stay for as long as they’re open. I take all my friends here as long as they know how to swing.

Good times, not too expensive. decent course for sure. We golfed there last week and I have to say, they went above an beyond to make a wrong a right. They really took care of us and I appreciate all that they did. Decent course and a fun time was had by all.

This course is nice overall, but the grass in the rough is very long. If you miss the fairway, the shot out is very difficult to get back on track. The course also has some steeper slopes, both in the fairway and on the greens, so a cart is recommended. The people in the pro shop are very nice, and it was overall a fun round.

The gate was not open at 8:30 and I waited for 20 minutes and still nothing, I called twice and no answer.
