Stonehouse Golf Club
Stonehouse Golf Club offers a demanding yet accessible 18-hole parkland layout set within Virginia’s woodlands. With large bentgrass greens, strategic challenges, and multiple tee options, it delivers a thoughtful golf experience suitable for a wide range of players.
Course Overview
Stonehouse Golf Club, located in Toano, Virginia, presents an 18-hole championship layout crafted to test club selection and strategic thinking. The course combines a parkland style with natural Virginia woodlands, offering a blend of wide fairways and complex green complexes that demand accuracy both off the tee and on approach shots. Players encounter a variety of holes featuring elevation changes, blind shots, and large bentgrass greens, which are noted for rolling true despite occasional tired patches. The setting weaves towering pines, hardwood groves, and subtle water hazards into a golf experience that prioritizes course management.
The course offers multiple tee options, making it approachable for a range of skill levels while still offering solid challenges for low handicappers. Fairways provide generous landing zones, but shots that stray too far from these corridors often find themselves in thicker rough or natural terrain, encouraging thoughtful placement and careful shot execution. The sizable greens demand precision in putting while fitting naturally within the landscape.
Amenities include a clubhouse with a grill offering food services, accessible via an innovative QR code ordering system from the golf carts. While the absence of beverage cart service during warm days has been noted, players will find water stations positioned on the course to stay hydrated. Walking is permitted, and given the course’s layout and terrain, sturdy footwear is recommended for those choosing to traverse on foot.
Seasonal conditions can impact playability, with maintenance crews actively managing disease on fairways and making steady improvements to tee boxes and greens. Golfers are advised to check current course conditions in advance to align expectations with ongoing maintenance efforts.
Stonehouse Golf Club invites players looking for a thoughtful round amid Virginia’s woodlands. The careful balance of challenge and playability ensures a rewarding round for players willing to engage both mind and skill on a course that emphasizes precision over power.

Was told over the phone it was $70 to play. Get here and it’s $105 because we don’t live in the state. The course hasn’t been mowed in at least 5 days. 4-7in weeds on every tee box and even in some fairways. Fairways are basically rough. I would not play here again. There’s many other courses in the area that are way cheaper and the conditions are premium. For )105 you’d think they could afford to hire someone to cut the grass, which is an essential part of golf course maintenance I thought.

Good layout. Not very well maintained. 4 inch weeds on tee boxes, tee box markers vary between 2 black spheres, 2 black stone markers, one of each and one random rock on a tee box (2nd hole). Clumpy grass in most fairways because they haven't been mowed. This course could be so good if it put more emphasis on playing conditions. Many areas of the course hasn't seen a mower in a week. Solid Bermuda greens, but they were slow, around 8 to 8.5.

Hate to see this course waste its potential. 80% of the greens are awful and as others have stated the tee boxes are something you’d find at a course charging $20 for 18 holes. For over $100 I’d expect much better conditions. At least mow all the tee boxes? Especially for a tournament. The layout itself is a lot of fun however there’s 0 attention to detail.

I’m really surprised with the previous poor reviews. Pros- Bentgrass greens are in great shape and rolling true. - Challenging layout makes you think off the tees, and course management is critical. - Fairways in great shape. Cons- no food/beverage service on a 95° day. Water was available on the course, but no cart service. - Some diseased spots on a few fairways, but they’re obviously working hard to repair them, and the overall conditions of the greens are excellent.

A wonderful course. A variety of tees for varying skill levels all selected to challenge you from tee to green. The fairways (mostly) offer a large landing area but outside of that you'll encounter rough terrain so place your shots well. The yardage chart provides distance to both the green and 150 markers. Make sure you note the aiming sticks(?) are plain white while the 150 yd markers are black and white. There are LOTS of blind shots. The greens are massive but tightly placed and in great condition with some bare spots but the maintenence crew has done well ensuring the bare spots still roll true. The grill offers excellent food choices with an order ahead qr code in the carts. Definitely a course worth playing and I look forward to playing again.

Was expecting more for the $70 9-hole price. Maintenance was just not that great for the entire course. Need to reduce price and or keep up with the course better!
