Hell's Point Golf Club

Virginia Beach, Virginia, USAVirginia Beach Area

Hell's Point Golf Club provides an accessible coastal experience just outside Virginia Beach with an 18-hole layout that emphasizes accuracy in a relaxed, natural setting. Ideal for players seeking a straightforward round influenced by seaside winds and simple, sandy fairways.

Course Overview

Situated in Virginia Beach, Hell's Point Golf Club offers a straightforward, approachable layout for golfers seeking a relaxed coastal round. This 18-hole public course extends a modest challenge with sandy soil and flat terrain typical of the region. The course's design puts a premium on accuracy over length, with fairways bordered by natural sandy waste areas and modest, often undulating greens that require careful approach shots.

The landscape feels open and airy, exposed to coastal breezes that influence shot selection and club choice. While the vegetation is modest—comprised mostly of hardy grasses and low shrubbery—the surrounding environment reflects the maritime climate, lending a calm and quiet atmosphere without dense foliage or towering trees to obscure views.

Playability at Hell's Point favors casual players and those wanting to work on fundamentals rather than seeking a highly manicured championship test. The course’s condition has varied in recent seasons, particularly following heavy rains endemic to the locale. Turf maintenance challenges mean that some tees and fairways can show wear or unevenness, while greens require patient putting due to their firmness and variable speed.

Amenities include a small clubhouse and a practice area, although cart usage is regulated with policies that may restrict access to certain parts of the facilities outside of tee times. This needs to be considered when planning a visit.

Hell's Point can appeal to golfers who enjoy coastal layouts with the ebb and flow of natural elements and are prepared for a less polished, more rustic golfing experience. The course rewards strategic shot placement and is well-suited for those looking to sharpen their game in a relaxed setting close to Virginia Beach’s popular resort areas.

Players should plan accordingly for walking conditions, as the terrain is generally flat but sandy underfoot, and cart policies may require some carrying of clubs. The best times to play are during drier months when the course avoids the soggy conditions that occasionally affect playability. Though not a classic destination course, Hell's Point offers an honest round that embraces its natural seaside setting.

Course Highlights

Hell's Point is defined by its coastal, low-lying terrain where sandy waste areas flank fairways. The course's openness invites steady wind considerations, influencing strategy on each hole. Its approachable design suits beginners and casual players, while nuanced green surfaces add subtle challenges. The simplicity of the layout focuses attention on shot placement rather than length.

This course is absolutely horrible. It’s the only course I’ve ever been to that won’t give you the cart key until your tee time. So no retrieving clubs with your cart, though they let you return them with your cart. No taking the cart over to the practice range. The conditions of course are what really make it horrible though. Yes, the area floods. Yes, it rained the night before. However, this doesn’t explain the dirt (elevated) tee boxes, the uncut grass, the climbs of crabgrass/weeds in the fairway, ruts everywhere, etc. Let’s not forget the concrete, I mean ‘sand’ traps. Now I know why it was the only course to have tee times available on a Friday here in Virginia Beach.

The price was not worth the play. The course is in almost laughable condition. The tee boxes are the worst I've played in many years, little grass and mostly sand/mud. One or two tee boxes would be understandable, but almost all of them were in this condition. The greens have crabgrass all over, as if little to zero maintenance is being performed. The greens dont look like they've been cut and rolled in quite some time, so prepare for that. It is also annoying you cannot drive your cart to your vehicle. This wasnt a deal breaker, just the icing on the cake after a miserable outing. The course has potential but it's clear the club is not being taken care of, so hopefully these things get corrected for your next round.

First of all, I would give it a 5 if the tees were nicer. The tees are pretty rough, but the rest of the course was great. I read reviews about snakes and almost didn’t play it because of this, but I didn’t see any snakes, but I would not go looking for balls if you hit them in the woods.

This course looked like it was mowed by geese and deer. The greens were like playing on a torn up rug. The owner detained us for a hour to see our Id and didn’t even bother to show up waste of my time, never coming back, don’t recommend.

Someone needs to tell them they are NOT a country club . Hells Point management needs to accept reality. If they would portray themselves as a laid back beach course while on vacation I think the reviews would change for the better...letting wives/kids use clubs out of one bag, collared shirts (while watching dude in jeans on the range), keeping a key out of the cart when carts are literally parked in the parking lot, during midday NO balls to use on the range. NOW , the golf course. It's a goat path on sand , tee boxes are sand , the grass sucks, the greens suck, the course is clearly not maintained. Hells Point stop acting like a country club !!!!!!!!! Go to Virginia Beach National or Heron Ridge is the play while on vacation

Called ahead about condition of course since it had rained recently and the area can be a little bit of a flood zone. They said it was all clear with a few puddles, but nothing that’d interfere with my game. Drove the 34 minutes there since it was close to my buddy. When I arrived there was no room to drop my bag off. Went inside to pay and was shocked at the price just by the club house standards, or lack there of. I did get nervous at the wall of fame security camera pictures of all the people who are now banned; each being sported with a brief description of their actions that brought on such a punishment. I recognized the clerk’s voice from the phone call, and he would not give me the cart key until it was our tee time. I later found out he is one of the new owners, alongside his wife. So I lugged my bag all the way to the clubhouse after paying $48 for a weekday greens fee before cart fee. We sat and waited, in the hot sun, outside, with no shade until we were deemed fit to drive the cart at their telling. Headed to the first tee and immediately knew we were in trouble. A soggy tee box, that’s elevated, is bad news for the rest of the course. Parts of the fairways were flooded with 6 inches of water, mud splatter with every divot, and balls engulfed on the green after an elevated approach shot. After about 6-7 holes and a dozen water hazarded ball; of the same, poor, wet conditions. Me and my friend decided to head back to the clubhouse for a rain check. While we would’ve preferred to be refunded a full 18 holes cost, we would’ve settled for just about the minimum. The owner absolutely refused, while it started as a professional and quiet transaction. It soon escalated on his end with volume, tone, and his hand gestures. Accusing us of trying to “steal free golf” and “lying about the course.” After 5 minutes of just letting his make a fool of himself and selling me on the idea of never returning; I made one final plea for a 9 holes cost rain check. Which he swiftly denied and then said we could finish our round or leave. While I don’t think we made the wall of fame of the lucky banned members. I have zero intent of returning, ever again. I told this story to a few of my golf buddies and they all had a story of their own; whether it was condition, price, or the new owners. I would steer clear of this course; whether you’re a tenured scratch golfer or just looking to start your game at a local “cheap” course. The ONLY reason I am giving this course 2 stars is because the other staff was extremely friendly and greeted us with smiles.

Awful course. Tees are all sand. No grass on tees. Slowest greens I've ever played. Not worth the money paid. Will never play there again.

Greens of doom and despair. I came golfing with my buddy I haven’t seen in a few years and he’s battling cancer so I got the first 3 holes in and a rude “manager” kicked us off because apparently we booked a tee time for the only golf course in America that doesn’t allow kids. tee boxes are sand traps sand traps look like tee boxes I missed a putt due to the hole being cut poorly wouldn’t recommend especially if you have kids.
