Furman University Golf Club

Greenville, South Carolina, USAUpstate South Carolina

Furman University Golf Club in Greenville delivers a well-crafted 18-hole parkland experience prized for its challenging greens and strategic layout. With smooth, undulating putting surfaces and a fair but demanding design, it offers a balanced test for golfers of all levels within easy reach of the city.

Course Overview

Furman University Golf Club offers an engaging 18-hole layout that balances approachable play with strategic challenges in Greenville, South Carolina. This public course, originally designed by Richard K. Weber in the late 1950s and revitalized with renovations in 2008, presents a classic parkland setting where mature trees, subtle elevation shifts, and well-placed water hazards influence shot selection at every turn. While its scenery is unpretentious—with glimpses of ponds and tree-lined fairways—its well-maintained conditions stand out, especially in the smooth, undulating greens that often dictate the final score.

The course appeals broadly to golfers of varied skill levels but offers particular tests for players looking to sharpen their short game. The greens require precision; many feature subtle breaks and "turtle shell" formations that challenge even experienced putters. Fairways are generally generous but demand accuracy against strategically positioned bunkers and natural hazards. Notably, the 3rd hole is regarded as one of its tougher stretches, asking for a carefully measured drive followed by a well-judged approach to a green with a deceptive false right side. This hole exemplifies the course’s blending of straightforward holes with those requiring thoughtful play.

Furman University Golf Club encourages walking, with a gently rolling terrain that complements the experience without excessive strain. The clubhouse retains a modest, traditional feel, serving as a comfortable hub for players before and after rounds. Practice facilities are functional and well-kept, supporting warm-ups and putting drills.

Set just off the Greenville urban area, the course offers a convenient option for visitors and locals seeking a quality parkland experience without venturing far from the city. Its maintenance, playability, and hallmark greens make Furman a frequently recommended destination in the Upstate region, especially for golfers wanting a test that’s accessible yet rewarding.

In all, Furman University Golf Club provides solid, thoughtful golf in a setting that prizes steadiness and skill over spectacle. It invites you to engage with a layout that respects tradition while offering moments of genuine challenge.

Course Highlights

Signature greens are the defining feature here, with fast, undulating surfaces that test putting skill. The third hole demands tactical play and precise approach shots, featuring a false right side that can repulse inaccurate attempts. The course’s classic parkland style combines tree-lined fairways with subtle elevation changes and strategically placed bunkers, all maintained to high standards after the 2008 renovation.

Furman is always in good shape. It's not the most plush course in the world, but it is well taken care of. The fairways are well defined and in good shape, but usually a little harder. The layout is challenging but not overly difficult. The tee boxes are decent. The greens are the headliner at Furman. They roll fast for the area compared to all other courses. They are undulating and hard to hit. Your short game will likely suffer the first few times you play here. Many turtle shell greens that make it difficult to hold. The cart and practice areas are all well maintained. The club house is just an old school club house, hot dog at the turn.. Scores out of 10 Club house 6.8 Carts 8.5 Tee boxes 7.1 Fairways 7.4 Greens 8.2 Course Layout 7.6 Pace of play 7.5 Overall: 7.59 / 10

$100 for two people to play 9 holes with a cart after 3pm? Meh. Course was fine but not worth that price.

Furman is a great golf course. Very playable for all levels but definitely offers a challenge, especially from the back tees. Greens are generally in great shape.

Rated the #1 public course in the Upstate of South Carolina, which is not a surprise. It's also rated in the top college courses in the country. Designed by Richard K. Weber in the late 1950s and recently had a renovation in 2008. This course has been the home of famous PGA and LPGA players alike. Brad Faxon, Betsy King, Beth Daniel, Dottie Pepper, Joan Delk, and Sherri Turner, to name a few. I truly feel if you can play the Furman course well, you should be able to play well anywhere. This course is a mix of tight fairways and complex greens. These greens may be the best test of putting in the area. Some drastic movement, but where it digs in, is subtle movement late near the hole locations. There are fantastic bunkers, which are well positioned around the course. It's a great mix of par 3's, 4's, and 5's. This course also calls on a handful of shaping with fades and draws from the tees and fairways. The course is easy to walk and makes for a fantastic time. In my opinion, the 3rd hole may be the toughest and best hole. It requires a medium to short drive and then demands a great approach. The green has a false right side, and anything close to that edge will fall off the green. Putting on this surface will take the most keen of eyes, there's movement everywhere. I highly recommend this course and make it a must if you're in the upstate!

Hey my last name is Furman, so I wish I could give this course 5 stars but I can't.. Overall rating: Scenic: 6.9/10 Conditions: 7.25/10 Layout: 6.75/10 It was a pretty solid course, the scenery was pretty basic, a couple of ponds and some nice trees on the property, but you can hear the bustle of the city around you, loud vehicles and stereo systems. Course conditions were pretty good, nothing really out of place or bad. The greens were in great shape, and rolled well. I played in March so I'm sure this course wasn't at it's peak which is why I'm giving it a strong rating for looking so good just coming out of winter. The layout was alright, not super challenging, and most holes are pretty straight. I'm not a huge fan of parkland style courses (ones that you can see most of the course to the left and right of you.) It had some elevation changes, some dog legs, and a few water challenges but nothing to write home about. Overall the course was nice, and nothing I would complain about. I would definitely enjoy this course if I lived in the area. I was told by a lot of people in the area to play this course. I think so many people recommended it because it the closest course in town to play, but it seemed to be over hyped. For ease of access, yeah it's great, but if you go just a little drive away, you'll run into a lot better courses.
