River Falls Plantation

Duncan, South Carolina, USAUpstate South Carolina

River Falls Plantation presents an 18-hole mountain-style course carved into rolling terrain with elevation changes that reward thoughtful play. Its firm greens and strategic bunkering offer a testing yet enjoyable challenge for a wide range of golfers.

Course Overview

River Falls Plantation offers a demanding yet rewarding round for golfers seeking a course that blends natural terrain with strategic design. Located in Duncan, South Carolina, this 18-hole layout challenges players with its rolling hills and elevation changes that shape every shot. The course falls into the mountain-style category, where the undulating fairways and elevated greens require precise club selection and thoughtful course management.

From the first tee, golfers are presented with a robust test, with long carries over natural creeks and sweeping doglegs that navigate the contours of the land. The routing takes advantage of the site's elevation, providing vistas that open up across wooded valleys and small water features, each hole contributing to a sense of progression and discovery. Bunkers strategically protect the fairways and greens, demanding accuracy and punishing errant shots.

River Falls Plantation’s fairways are generally well-maintained, with recent improvements removing concerns about cart path conditions. While some golfers find the greens firm and quick, they remain true and offer ample opportunity for creative putting. The course’s layout skews toward more experienced players as the combination of slopes and tight landing areas can challenge low handicaps, though higher handicappers will find rewarding shots if they keep the ball in play and think strategically around the greens.

The club’s driving range and practice facilities provide solid preparation areas, useful for honing skills prior to a round. Cart use is mandatory due to the terrain’s steep elevation changes and long distances between holes, offering convenience and pacing a round efficiently.

Visitors praise the friendly atmosphere in the clubhouse and Tavern 290, adding a social element to the golf experience. River Falls Plantation stands out for its blend of natural beauty and demanding golf, making it a destination for those looking to engage both mind and muscle over 18 holes in the foothills of South Carolina’s mountain region.

Course Highlights

River Falls Plantation is distinguished by its challenging elevation shifts and mountain-style layout. The course’s layout includes tight fairways guarded by bunkers and natural water hazards that demand thoughtful shot placement. The recently paved cart paths ease navigation through steep hills, while holes like the long par-5 9th and the elevated par-3 16th provide memorable tests that reward precision. The clubhouse and Tavern 290 add a welcoming touch, rounding out the experience with friendly staff and good post-round options.

Greens are rolling nicely, but they are very firm right now. The fairways are in good shape, and the tee boxes are OK. This is a well-kept course that seems to be getting even better. Nice driving range and putting green and nice carts. The layout is nice but a bit more on the difficult side. Paid for 18 holes online…had the receipt, confirmation, and the naïve optimism that this course would actually deliver what it advertised. Showed up at 5:30 for our tee time, only to be told by the ranger that we “only paid for 9.” Interesting twist, considering the receipt clearly said otherwise. So we paid $36 each for 9 holes, apparently luxury pricing for the privilege of being gaslit. Then came the kicker: carts had to be back by 7:30… despite the sun not setting until well after 9:00. Not sure if they’re enforcing daylight curfew or just hate fun. Oh, and the course? Three greens looked like they were auditioning for a demolition derby, “ground under repair” would’ve been a compliment. I’d be more forgiving if I felt like I played golf, but this felt more oh sorry, It could be worse we still feel like our No one a guy even mow his yard and then it’s been kept up neighborhood is pretty a scam with sand traps.

Beautiful, challenging course. Great prices and super friendly staff. Cart paths look freshly paved and great course, all around. Greens are extremely fast right now, but will even out once the grass comes in.

Greens were in terrible condition. Nice challenging layout. I’m sure in a couple of months the greens will comeback … a little pricey for the course conditions.

Before coming here in and reading some reviews, i noticed several people mentioning the terrible cart paths. Well they are updated and paved now lol. The fair ways were good. Greens were not the best. Hard to get a good read on them. Guys are the pro shop were really nice...ladies at the restaurant not so much. Hole 1 you better be quick. Range balls will be flying at you if you hit it left.

Great people! Beautiful Clubhouse. Doug was Very friendly and Travis was awesome, definitely a chill guy and helped with the tee time. Jamie and Erin in the Tavern 290 were friendly and quick on the drinks. Great conversationalists. Good price for a 6 pack of beer! Now I will say, beautiful course, narrow, challenging, and fun. The greens on the front need a little TLC and I think the tee boxes on the back need help, one tee box was completely mud. But again, Beautiful course. You can't please everyone and there will always be people griping. I UNDERSTAND why it is a NO WALKING course, from Green to next Tee box is a distance!!! The pace of play would be backed up. That's not all though, this course has a SWITCH BACK up a steep hill... I've never seen a switch back on a course lol. The course is hilly and I'm thankful for the carts and understand why no walking. Great great people! Thank you Travis, Doug, Jamie, and Erin, y'all are amazing.

This course is normally in ok shape. Just a Mickey Mouse layout. Today the fairways were fine but half of the tee boxes and every single green was absolutely gone. Absolutely embarrassing.
