With a friendly atmosphere and a course design that balances challenge and accessibility, it stands out as a practical yet engaging choice in the Upper Peninsula.
Course Overview
Red Fox Run Golf Course offers a refreshing blend of challenge and accessibility in the heart of Gwinn, Michigan. This 18-hole public layout stretches across terrain shaped by an old Air Force base, which lends the course a distinctive character marked by open fairways and rolling hills. The landscape reveals subtle elevation changes and natural contours that reward thoughtful shot-making, while occasional blind shots demand focus and course management. The mix of straightforward and more complex holes shapes a dynamic round that adapts well to different skill levels.
Players will find the course approachable for beginners, thanks to tee boxes situated forward on many holes to shorten distances, while low handicappers can test their mettle from the longer tees. The presence of the "Big Cup" alongside standard cups on greens accelerates pace of play and enhances the experience for golfers seeking a brisk yet enjoyable round. Sand traps are strategically placed around the greens to offer risk-reward opportunities without overwhelming less experienced golfers.
The greens themselves stand out as a key feature, receiving consistent praise for their smoothness and responsiveness. Their subtle breaks call for attentiveness but remain fair. The surrounding fairways and rough share similar turf conditions, offering a uniform playing surface that balances challenge with playability.
The clubhouse, while modest, provides a welcoming space to unwind post-round with well-prepared food and a friendly staff known for personal service. Though lacking some modern amenities such as locker rooms or extensive beverage options, the atmosphere fosters a community feeling that suits casual golfers and regulars alike.
Red Fox Run maintains a steady pace of play and encourages walking, which complements the course’s natural setting and open layout. Practical policies that limit group sizes and cart availability reflect a focus on an enjoyable experience for all.
Ideal for golfers looking for a reasonable challenge without sacrificing comfort, Red Fox Run stands as a quietly rewarding destination where the land shapes the game and every hole invites reflection on strategy and skill.
Course Highlights
The course’s routing takes advantage of natural elevation for vistas rarely seen in the Upper Peninsula, blending open fairways with challenging greens. Its signature nod comes from a small but demanding par-3 green that tests precision amid undulations. The inclusion of forward tees and larger cup options enhances accessibility, while well-maintained sand traps add strategic depth without undue penalty.

Nice course. Some challenging holes but even a novice golfer can handle it. My son said, "Don't get discouraged at the next hole." What? Discouraged? Never! Even got a punch card!

This course is a challenging woods course with smooth greens and strategically placed sand traps. Unfortunately the clubhouse looks like it hasn't been updated since the 80s, there are no locker rooms, cold or pantry food options, limited selections for alcohol, and some restricting policies that limit the freedoms other golf courses in the area offer (i.e. carts in by 9, no tee times past 6p-7p differing depending on employee, and no group golfing over parties of 4). The staff is always polite and personal, and the improvements made throughout the years have surpassed what I could have imagined. Give this course a chance and you won't be disappointed.

Only 2 stars because the staff was friendly. Extremely overpriced, $34 for 9 with a cart. Wouldn't mind but course is trash minus the greens. Fairway, rough, and tee boxes are all the same length. I'd pay maybe $15 for 9 holes.

Interesting course near an old Air-force base. Open and hilly. A great place for a round of golf! Stay for lunch afterwards.

this is a wonderful track located on an old air force base just outside of Marquette, MI in the community of Gwinn, MI. The course is a lower end operating budget but has a lot of great features. I play here often and the pace of play is very good. The course design is moderate. It has its very easy, straight ahead holes. But then it has it holes that are longer, one par three is difficult because of the size of the green from front to back is very small. Then some holes follow the natural landscape which causes some big blind shots and elevation changes. The BEST part of this golf course is its friendliness to all levels of golfers. from those who like to play from the tips to the beginner, youth, and senior citizens. The crew has placed the standard pin on the greens but also now have the larger "Big Cup" as well. Which speeds up play. They also have tee markers specifically for youth / beginner golfers. these tees are moved up on the fairway. This is a great idea! the clubhouse is very nice as well, great food. staff is friendly and easy to visit with while haveing a drink an/or meal.
