SunRiver Golf Club

St. George, Utah, USASouthwestern Utah

SunRiver Golf Club in St. George, Utah, offers an 18-hole parkland course that blends approachable playability with desert scenery. Known for its solid fairways and accessible layout, the course demands strategic precision amid variable green conditions.

Course Overview

SunRiver Golf Club presents an 18-hole public layout situated in the striking desert landscape just outside St. George, Utah. This parkland-style course balances natural terrain with manicured fairways, offering a relaxed round framed by arid vistas and distant red rock formations. Its setting offers an approachable challenge for players across skill levels, though certain maintenance issues, particularly with the greens, have been noted by recent visitors, which can affect the overall pace and playability.

Stretching just over 6,500 yards with a par of 72, the layout unfolds through gentle undulations and well-defined fairways. Players will find the fairway conditions among the best parts of the course, with firm and receptive turf that holds shots well. Elevation changes are subtle rather than severe, allowing golfers to focus on shot placement without the intimidation of extreme slopes or forced carries.

Greens, however, have drawn criticism for inconsistent surfaces and compromised turf quality. Sanding treatments appear rough in some areas, impacting putting smoothness. This variable green condition is an important consideration for any visitor aiming to test their short game precision. For those focused on driving accuracy and approach shots, the course rewards thoughtful strategy and controlled play.

Amenities include a well-stocked pro shop and access to cart rentals, with walking permitted though the desert terrain calls for sturdy shoes and sun protection. The club maintains a calm, low-key atmosphere without marshals frequently present, contributing to an unhurried pace. Bathrooms on course are limited, and certain holes may require a bit of planning for comfort breaks.

SunRiver’s environment offers expansive views of the southwestern skies and a desert backdrop that interacts with shifting light throughout the day. While wildlife sightings have become less common in recent years, the landscape still carries an untouched feel that places golf in quiet conversation with nature. Golfers should approach this course ready for a straightforward round with attention to the green conditions as they plan their visit.

Overall, SunRiver Golf Club offers reasonable value for players seeking desert golf close to St. George, provided expectations for greens firmness and smoothness are managed.

Course Highlights

SunRiver is defined by its desert parkland style, featuring firm fairways that encourage bold tee shots. Though the greens have struggled with surface consistency, the course’s routing through open desert offers expansive views of Utah’s iconic red rock horizon. The course provides a straightforward test focused on shot placement and course management rather than forced carries or extreme elevation shifts.

Course was in overall good shape, minus the fringe area which was in poor condition for no obvious reason. The rest of the course was in great shape. The price was very reasonable considering it included a cart. The pace of play was very good and didn't see a single staff member or marshall the entire time. Views were excellent and the course was a good challenge.

These greens were not in good shape. They told us when we arrived from SLC that the greens were punched and they would understand if we left and didn’t want to play. How would we get another tee time on vacation during spring break? The greens were sanded with rocks. I couldn’t even use my putter because the rocks in the sand were so big. The greens were unplayable and the course told us that they would not be offering a deal for the greens being in such bad shape. Paying full price for these greens was absolutely terrible.

By far the worst greens I have ever seen or played in my entire life. The fairways were either in typical condition you find on a golf course in this area(well kept) or they were awful and ugly the closer you get to the green. We made plans to come to St George for the holiday weekend to play as many courses in the area we could and instantly regretted wasting our money here. We will never come here again and would recommend to everyone else to go find a different course. Even if they offer you to play for $10, it is not worth it.

This is an average course for St.george. Here's why it gets 2 stars, and that's being generous. Slightly more expensive. Than other courses of the same caliber. There was no stand out hole. They all just kind of blend together. The greens were in terrible shape. Same with the fringes. The only thing in good shape were the fairways. 9/10 there. One bathroom on the course between 7 and 17. Bird crap all over those two holes. That concludes this review. There are better courses to play for the same price or lower.

Many years ago when my parents first moved to Sunriver, I took my dad's golf cart after hours on the course and there was a cow on the golf cart path. I drove it back home to my dad who called the pro shop and we're told that happens all the time we'll go out and fix it. I drove the golf cart and back to see this gentleman using an umbrella to shoo the cow back onto the property where it was supposed to be. We got permission to take our dogs after hours out on the course and allow them to run around and we did it every night and it was a wonderful exercise for the dogs. We occasionally would run into the maintenance guys who took their dogs with them when they worked and it was so fun to watch them run through the sprinklers. After a couple years came back to visit only to find there was no rabbits or wildlife anywhere on the course and I found out that they had put poison in the grass to kill them. Later one night the owner came flying up in his golf cart and screaming at me to get off his golf course.. This was news to me and I found out later that he had gotten into bankruptcy. I heard that the bankruptcy got rescued by the Sunriver organization which is I believe paid for by the members of it which blows me away that they don't get free time on the course to play. The last couple years I found out they went to the extent of blocking off every entrance from the residences paths that used to allow them to take their golf carts after hours and enjoy it. Such a sad demise. From what I understand most of the residents go to other golf courses.

Horrible course conditions. Tee boxes were in rough shape! Was the most expensive course and in worst shape of all the courses we played in St George. Starter and pro shop rushed us out before our actual tee time stating they were behind schedule. So why push us out early and then we wait 5-10 mins on every tee box for groups in front of us!
