Course Overview
Odana Hills Golf Course presents a compelling experience for golfers seeking a traditional yet approachable public layout in Madison, Wisconsin. This 18-hole course offers a classic parkland design, weaving through mature trees and gently rolling terrain that shapes fairways of moderate width and presents a variety of strategic shot opportunities. The course challenges players with well-placed bunkers and thoughtfully contoured greens that demand precision without punishing less experienced golfers harshly. Though not excessively long, the layout encourages thoughtful club selection and shot management, making it suitable for a broad spectrum of skill levels.
The setting captures a blend of natural beauty and functional design, with fairways lined by stands of oak and maple that provide seasonal color contrasts and occasional shade. Water hazards make selective appearances, adding interest without overwhelming the routing. The greens are generally receptive and fast, rewarding a steady putting stroke. Several holes invite careful planning, particularly the mid-course stretch, which tests control and distance consistency.
As a municipal facility, Odana Hills remains accessible to the community and visitors alike, though players should expect a lively pace, especially on weekends. Management emphasizes walkability, and the course’s terrain is comfortably navigable on foot, best approached with sturdy golf shoes to handle occasional damp conditions. Amenities on site support a complete outing experience with a clubhouse offering refreshments and a modest pro shop.
While the course delivers an enjoyable round for casual players and those working on their game, low handicappers will find enough subtle challenges to engage them. Its public status makes it an inviting option for local residents or visitors who want traditional golf without the premium cover charges of private clubs. Planning your round midweek or during less busy hours will enhance enjoyment by avoiding heavy traffic.
Odana Hills maintains its reputation as one of Madison’s accessible golf options that balances playability with classic midwestern parkland charm. Whether teeing off early in the morning or under the soft light of a Wisconsin afternoon, players can expect a course that encourages rhythm and focus across 18 varied holes.
Course Highlights
The course is defined by rolling parkland fairways bordered by mature deciduous trees, offering varied wind conditions that can influence shot selection. Multiple bunkers protect greens and serve as visual and strategic landmarks throughout. The mid to late holes provide some of the most technical challenges with tighter fairways and intricate green complexes. The course’s municipal nature ensures accessibility and a welcoming atmosphere, complemented by a modest clubhouse and practice facilities.

The place is so poorly managed on the weekends it is not worth playing. We had a fivesome (which should never happen) playing so poorly, that there were 4 groups playing on the 11th hole from the green back to the tee, with another 4 some putting on the 10th green. I know the mayor hates the golf courses, but hire a ranger to manage the pace and hold players accountable so they can learn how to manage their games properly. Or at least hire a manager of some kind. All businesses should respect the hard earned money people spend at them. Odana GC does not do that. 1 hour to play three holes. Ridiculous.

The best public track in the state. Play it every day and it never gets old. Great staff will get you out in a snap. Great conditions too.

Little expensive for what you get. That being said, greens were in good shape for the majority of the holes, tee boxes were good also. Decently challenging course too. Based on other reviews I thought I was walking onto a dog track, but I was pleasantly surprised.

I've played here many times over the last few years, and I've always loved it. Great public course. However, the price gouging in the fall is ridiculous, and the customer service was abysmal. Played the front 9 in 2:20 with a foursum and stopped for a bathroom break. We then asked for food and were shut down and told to GO because we were behind schedule. Definitely come here if you want to pay $65 for 18 and feel like you're doing them a favor to play here.

Not worth the price. Rude course regulars think they own the course and hate when they’re told it’s public. Don’t waste your time, there are far better courses in and around Madison.
