Middletown, Rhode Island, USASouthern New England

Wanumetonomy Golf & Country Club in Middletown, Rhode Island, delivers a private 18-hole championship course where coastal breezes and ocean views shape every hole. This layout combines strategic bunkering with fast, true greens that challenge golfers across skill levels while offering an authentic seaside golf experience.

Course Overview

Located along the scenic shoreline of Middletown, Rhode Island, Wanumetonomy Golf & Country Club offers an 18-hole championship layout that balances classic coastal golf with a contemporary challenge. This private course is embraced by the Atlantic’s proximity, where winds shape each shot and vibrant ocean views provide a constantly shifting backdrop. Players encounter fairways framed by salt-tolerant grasses, gentle dunes, and strategic bunkering that guard well-contoured greens, demanding precise approach shots and thoughtful strategy.

The course's design caters to a broad spectrum of golfers, providing an engaging yet fair test for low handicaps while retaining accessibility for more moderate players. Its routing takes golfers along varied terrain, from breezy seaside holes to more sheltered inland stretches lined by mature trees and natural marshland. Quick, true greens reward an accurate short game but will penalize misreads and rushed putts, encouraging steady composure and shot decision-making.

Beyond the playing surface, Wanumetonomy boasts meticulous maintenance standards evident in its lush fairways and smooth greens. The course’s setting offers a sensory blend of salt air, the distant crash of waves, and fresh ocean breezes that subtly sway each round. These elements combine to challenge tempo and concentration in a way unique to seaside golf.

Wanumetonomy’s clubhouse provides a refined environment to relax after play, featuring dining options with views over the course and the water beyond. The club’s private status ensures a quiet, uncrowded pace of play, ideal for golfers who value exclusivity alongside their sport.

Visitors planning a round should prepare for variable coastal winds and softer ground conditions during wetter months. Walking the course brings closer appreciation of subtle elevation changes and strategic hazards but requires good footwear for sandy and grassy transitions. The course encourages respectful play and a thoughtful approach, reflecting its heritage and natural surroundings.

Wanumetonomy Golf & Country Club offers an immersive golfing experience along Rhode Island’s shore, where landscape and layout blend seamlessly to provide challenge, beauty, and a deep connection to coastal golf traditions.

Course Highlights

Wish they allowed the military members they bought the club from to play there every now and then. Or at least give them a courtesy email/phone call back when they deny their membership requests. Very disappointing and very un-American..

Course was in immaculate shape! Fairways were cut short, rough was difficult, greens were slick and rolled true. The most underrated course in RI.
