Del Lago Golf Club
Del Lago Golf Club in Vail, Arizona, presents an 18-hole desert-style layout that challenges players with natural terrain, strategic bunkering, and firm greens. Offering a public course experience with a rugged southwestern backdrop, it appeals to a broad range of golfers seeking authentic desert golf.
Course Overview
Located in the high desert landscape of southeastern Arizona, Del Lago Golf Club offers an 18-hole layout that seeks to balance challenge with natural surroundings. Classified as a public-access course, it presents a desert-style design set against the rugged terrain near Vail. The course’s routing integrates native vegetation and arid terrain, with fairways often bordered by dry washes and desert brush. Golfers will notice the course’s layout demands precision off the tee and a measured approach around contoured greens, which test both shot-making and short-game skills.
Del Lago’s setting commands attention as the desert sun casts shifting shadows over the landscape. Though fairways show signs of wear in places, particularly during dry spells, the course nonetheless provides a true desert golf experience distinct from more lush parkland venues. Bunkers vary in firmness, sometimes challenging players to adjust their short-game tactics, while the absence of extensive water hazards places an emphasis on shot placement rather than forced carries.
The club’s 18 holes stretch approximately 6,900 yards with a par of 72, offering a layout that can engage mid- to high-handicap players while still presenting strategic opportunities for lower handicappers. Carts are available but limited, encouraging walking for those seeking a more immersive round in the cooling morning or late afternoon hours. Golfers should prepare for firm playing conditions typical of desert courses, selecting equipment and attire suitable for warm, dry climates.
On-site amenities include a pro shop that supports players with equipment and local guidance, complemented by a clubhouse dining option highly praised for its welcoming atmosphere and quality fare. While some recent reviews highlight maintenance challenges affecting playability, the course staff continuously works to enhance the condition of playing surfaces and facilities.
Del Lago Golf Club offers a compelling stop for golfers who want to experience Arizona’s desert terrain without travelling deep into more remote golfing regions. Its blend of natural desert elements with a sporty, technical layout creates a unique test that rewards thoughtful observation and steady execution throughout the round.

I’d rate this course lower if there was an option. The staff was incredibly rude to myself and my partner, guilted us the entire time for being a couple minutes late to our tee time which I understand but it was mentioned by every single staff member to us multiple times. Other golfers rushing you to play because the course has limited carts. And don’t even get me started on the state of the course itself. Some tee markers were missing, trash cans all filled to the brim with trash flowing out of them, fairways dead and dirt, bunkers with hard sand, and the greens were in terrible shape.

This golf course is unforgettable! If anyone ever asks me about the worst course I have ever played, I will have an easy answer. Horrible features include dried brown grass in the fairways, hard packed dirt in the bunkers, no drinking water on the course, no GPS on the carts, and takes the driver out of your hand on many holes. Never again!!

Played yesterday. Course in bad shape. Any ball even slightly off the center of the fairway has you hitting off of cement like ground with no grass. This was true around the greens also. Literally no sand in the traps. Several tee boxes shaved so close that there were large patches of dirt. I have played this course several times in the past and I really liked the layout and course conditions. Hope it gets better.

Our group of 8 played 18 holes using silver tees. Course was challenging yet fun for all. Most played well despite some works in progress on the front 9 tee boxes and greens. Green speed was great for our group. We wrapped up the day with an amazing dinner in the club house. The Chef knows his art for sure and the friendly staff set the positive mood. Burgers to Ribs we all enjoyed. Excellent value and highly recommended. Will come again.

Played 9 holes on Feb. 20th,2025. The course is in terrible shape. Pro shop guy was great and gave us a rain check for nine, will try again next year. We deserve better than this. The staff was great!! 2 stars for that.

Course was in good shape overall but had some really rough patches and the sand traps were like concrete.

Fairways are sporty and somewhat dry but overall a fun and challenging course. Your driver can be your best friend or your worst enemy.
