Forty Niner Golf Club

Tucson, Arizona, USASouthern Arizona

Forty Niner Golf Club in Tucson offers a desert-inspired 18-hole public course that blends approachable playability with subtle challenges. Its sandy waste areas and firm greens make for a varied experience set against the vivid Sonoran backdrop.

Course Overview

Located at 12000 E Tanque Verde Rd in Tucson, Arizona, Forty Niner Golf Club offers a distinctive golfing experience that balances approachability with moments of challenge for players of all skill levels. This 18-hole, public layout integrates elements of the desert environment with pockets of mature trees, lending variety and character to each hole. The course’s design takes advantage of the natural arid setting, with sandy waste areas and native grasses shaping fairway corridors that encourage strategic shot placement.

The topography is relatively flat but punctuated with subtle undulations that test a player's ability to navigate both the turf and the desert-like rough that edges many fairways. Greens are modestly contoured, rewarding precision without punishing mis-hits harshly, making Forty Niner an inviting choice for beginners and seasoned players alike. Players should prepare for varied footing, as several reviews note firm, sometimes hard-packed conditions, especially in the sand traps and certain rough areas, which can influence choice of clubs and shot types.

Visitors will appreciate the friendly and accommodating staff, praised for their helpfulness and efficient pace of play management, although mid-day rounds can occasionally be slowed by course flow during busier times. The clubhouse includes basic amenities suitable for a relaxed day of golf in Southern Arizona, and its location just east of Tucson makes it a convenient option for locals and travelers seeking a round without venturing far from city comforts.

While the desert winds can influence ball flight, enhancing the strategic depth of play, the course remains engaging throughout its 6,200 yards of par-72 golf. Walking is encouraged for those looking to immerse themselves fully in the surroundings and stay active, with generally firm terrain requiring sturdy footwear.

Forty Niner Golf Club stands out as a solid, value-driven choice for golfers wanting a desert-style course with a manageable layout. Its combination of natural desert features, moderate length, and thoughtful design elements deliver a satisfying round that is both approachable and quietly demanding.

Course Highlights

The course’s signature appeal lies in its integration of desert elements such as sandy waste areas and native grasses alongside traditional fairway and tree-lined holes. Greens are modestly contoured, inviting strategic approaches without over-complication. The layout presents a balance of straightforward holes and subtle challenges influenced by local terrain and wind conditions.

A nice course golf for the value! The course is relatively tight and with a lot of trees, which reminds me of the Midwest courses I learned to play on. Greens were in pretty good shape. Some of the fairways were a bit rough, as were some areas outside the cart path, but we enjoyed our time here overall.

They have a swim club and host TVHS swim despite consistent complaints from the new owner. Sadly the food is iffy, it could very well go either way with fast service or slow service. The new owner changed so much and honestly destroyed what was once a pretty good restaurant and country club. Update: They have only gone downhill. The quality is that of a money hungry soulless husk of what once was. The only good thing here is the fitness center and the pool, no thanks to the management, the golf course is only used by a limited few who can't be bothered to drive to the next golf course over or who already have access because they live in the neighborhood.

Played golf here for the first time today, with my wife. Conditions were windy however I wouldn't have minded that if the course was serviceable. This is one of the worst maintained courses I've played in recent memory. Many of the greens are rock hard so forget about any approach shots. There is hard pack dirt and weeds everywhere along and in the fairways. So many areas of dirt! chipping in many areas is like hitting off concrete. Fairways are mixed with saturated swamp grass and dry as a bone hard-pack. VERY disappointed.

First time golfing here and had an enjoyable time. I was a single with my wife spotting the ball for me due to vision issues. Check in was efficient and there is a starter. Pace was good until we made the turn. We were following a twosome with good pace on the front. When we came to 10, they stuck a foursome in front of us which slowed us down. I eventually skipped a hole which made pace much better. They should not let groups go off the back Unless there is a gap. Maybe the starter allowed? We golfed yesterday, tee time 12:50. Otherwise staff very friendly and the course was in decent shape. Sand traps are a dark hard surface. Not used to hitting out of that.
