El Rio Golf Course
El Rio Golf Course offers a friendly, accessible 18-hole layout on Tucson’s west side, combining desert parkland terrain with manageable playability. Featuring long par 3s, strategic bunkering, and budget-friendly rates, it suits golfers of all levels seeking a practical yet engaging round.
Course Overview
El Rio Golf Course provides an inviting round for golfers seeking a straightforward, approachable experience in Tucson’s west side. This 18-hole public municipal course stretches over a balanced layout that emphasizes playability while offering subtle challenges. The course is characterized by a traditional desert parkland style, where well-maintained fairways thread through native arid surroundings and pockets of mature trees, creating a calm atmosphere that contrasts with the city’s bustle. While not a sprawling championship track, El Rio’s design keeps players engaged with a mix of long par 3s, strategically placed bunkers, and approachable greens that reward accurate iron play.
The terrain is relatively flat, making it accessible for walkers and beginners, though the desert sun and occasional wind provide cautionary elements for timing your round. The greens possess a moderate speed with subtle undulations, encouraging thoughtful putting without overwhelming players new to the game. Several holes feature bunkers that guard key landing zones and the putting surfaces, adding strategic depth for those seeking extra challenge. The course’s honest layout suits a wide range of skill levels, from novices looking to build confidence to veterans aiming for a steady score.
Facilities include a pro shop located within the clubhouse restaurant, which offers convenience despite being separate from the driving range area. Golfers can rent clubs and carts, though walking remains popular and practical given the course’s manageable size. The course’s history as Tucson’s oldest adds a layer of community pride, witnessed by locals who value its accessibility and friendly staff. Rates remain budget-friendly, appealing to both casual players and those wanting a reliable after-work or spontaneous round.
Whether you’re seeking a relaxed outing or a chance to sharpen your short game under the desert sky, El Rio Golf Course presents a reliable and welcoming option. Its ease of access on West Speedway Boulevard and fair maintenance standards ensure a smooth visit. Timing your tee time for early morning or late afternoon helps avoid peak sun and maximize comfort. For golfers looking for a solid, no-frills round with a touch of Tucson character, El Rio stands ready to welcome you to its fairways.
Course Highlights
El Rio stands as Tucson’s oldest golf course and offers a desert parkland setting punctuated by mature trees and desert textures. Its longer par 3s and bunkers placed around key greens create engaging challenges without overwhelming novices. The course’s history and community presence contribute to a welcoming atmosphere that has drawn golfers for decades. The pro shop’s location within the clubhouse restaurant provides an unusual yet convenient hub for equipment rental and post-round refreshments.

While some would disagree, I really like El Rio. It's a nice , simple muni course conveniently located to everything. It's fairly easy to get on and get around. The bunkers are challenging on some holes, and there are some long par 3s, but it's a nice experience over all. I play all the time after work and really enjoy it. Definitely worth checking out the next time you have an after-work round, or want to golf on short notice.

A fun course and very forgiving for those of us that don't have our PGA Tour Card. Just 18 holes and located on Westside of Tucson near Silverbell and Speedway. City Public Course and played 18 holes with a cart for $23 (not bad for summer rates ). Being that we are in midsummer the course was a little dry, but the tee boxes and greens were nice. El Rio Golf Course is the place for a summer golf deal and good time! Recommend :)

It’s a beautiful golf course! I love the history behind it and that it’s originally for Mexicans❤️❤️❤️ It’s the oldest golf course in Tucson. Jason Figueroa is one of the golf pros there and he is amazing!

Pro shop is in a different place than the driving range; pro shop is in the restaurant. Otherwise, back 9 is pretty good; fast greens and a lot of bunkers!

Probably would have been a better experience if they wouldn't of lied about a frost delay. They had a group of 20 drunks tie off before EVERYONE!!!! Not cool. We drove from NM to play this course.!!
