El Rio Golf Course

Tucson, Arizona, USASouthern Arizona

El Rio Golf Course stands as Tucson’s oldest municipal course, offering a balanced 18-hole layout that combines approachable play with strategic bunkers and long par 3s. Its accessible location and well-maintained greens create a welcoming setting for golfers of all levels seeking an affordable yet engaging round.

Course Overview

El Rio Golf Course offers an authentic 18-hole municipal layout that balances straightforward play with thoughtful challenges, located just west of downtown Tucson. As the oldest course in the city, it carries a quiet heritage that enriches each round. The terrain is generally flat, combining open fairways with sandy desert elements and a scattering of mature trees that frame many holes, blending the course into its southwestern surroundings without overwhelming the golfer.

The course features moderate length, with several longer par 3s that require precise iron play. Strategic bunkers punctuate the layout, especially guarding many greens, demanding a focused approach while also forgiving occasional mis-hits. The greens are known for their speed and subtle breaks, both of which invite players to sharpen their putting skills. Water hazards are minimal, which keeps this accessible for players of various skill levels while still providing a test for mid-to-high handicappers.

El Rio’s playability is one of its defining traits. It strikes a balance between offering novices a welcoming environment and providing enough strategic elements to engage more experienced golfers. The design encourages a steady pace while rewarding thoughtful shot selection. Cart rentals are available, though many members and guests choose to walk the course, especially in cooler months when the weather is most agreeable.

Amenities include a club-operated pro shop integrated within the on-site restaurant, where golfers can gather before or after play. The driving range is located separately but conveniently close, enabling players to warm up efficiently. The course benefits from public accessibility, making it a popular choice for locals looking for an affordable, well-kept venue that fits comfortably into a busy schedule.

For golfers visiting Tucson, El Rio presents a solid test paired with an easygoing atmosphere. It’s an excellent option for after-work rounds, casual outings, or those seeking a round without the formality or expense of private clubs. Its historic roots and consistent conditioning provide a genuine local golf experience grounded in function and friendly play.

Course Highlights

El Rio features distinctive long par 3s and bunkers that actively shape scoring opportunities. Its flat desert layout offers a clear line of sight on most holes, complemented by fast greens that test putting accuracy. As Tucson’s oldest course, it retains historical significance while functioning as a practical, well-conditioned municipal venue.

A fun course and very forgiving for those of us that don't have our PGA Tour Card. Just 18 holes and located on Westside of Tucson near Silverbell and Speedway. City Public Course and played 18 holes with a cart for $23 (not bad for summer rates ). Being that we are in midsummer the course was a little dry, but the tee boxes and greens were nice. El Rio Golf Course is the place for a summer golf deal and good time! Recommend :)

Pro shop is in a different place than the driving range; pro shop is in the restaurant. Otherwise, back 9 is pretty good; fast greens and a lot of bunkers!

While some would disagree, I really like El Rio. It's a nice , simple muni course conveniently located to everything. It's fairly easy to get on and get around. The bunkers are challenging on some holes, and there are some long par 3s, but it's a nice experience over all. I play all the time after work and really enjoy it. Definitely worth checking out the next time you have an after-work round, or want to golf on short notice.

Probably would have been a better experience if they wouldn't of lied about a frost delay. They had a group of 20 drunks tie off before EVERYONE!!!! Not cool. We drove from NM to play this course.!!
