Hamptons Golf Course

Hampton, Virginia, USASoutheastern Virginia

Hamptons Golf Course in Hampton, Virginia, is a public 27-hole facility blending parkland and open field-style holes. While drainage and greens conditions require timing awareness, the course offers an affordable, versatile layout suitable for a wide range of golfers.

Course Overview

Located in Hampton, Virginia, Hamptons Golf Course is a public facility offering 27 holes that accommodate three distinct nine-hole layouts. The course presents a blend of parkland and open field-style holes, where the flat terrain carries intermittent water features that can influence play, particularly after rain. Weather and drainage issues have long been a part of the Hamptons experience, impacting course conditions and requiring golfers to carefully consider timing when planning a visit.

The course’s modest length makes it approachable for players with a range of skill levels, though maintenance challenges, especially with the greens and tee boxes, create added difficulty. The greens have been noted for uneven surfaces and numerous divots, factors that demand patience and precise putting. Bunkers are firm and compacted, presenting a distinct challenge for approach shots and recovery. While the design allows for alternative routing between the three nines, waterlogged areas occasionally influence strategic decisions on shot selection and club choice.

Hamptons Golf Course operates within a city-owned framework, reflecting a pragmatic balance between accessibility and upkeep. Rates remain affordable, inviting locals and visitors seeking budget-conscious rounds. The driving range, though somewhat removed from the first tee, provides additional practice space but may leave some players wanting in terms of proximity and setup. Walkers are welcomed, yet the flat, often damp terrain calls for careful footwear selection.

Though some staff interactions have garnered criticism, the course has a committed player base appreciative of its value and layout variety. Post-round amenities include a modest snack bar, where players can refuel after navigating the widely spaced holes across this sprawling municipal site.

For golfers looking to engage with a course that offers a no-frills, numeric challenge on a 27-hole layout, the Hamptons provides playing options not commonly found at city courses. Planning a round during drier periods is advisable to mitigate drainage issues and optimize the overall experience. The combination of open fairways and water hazards underscores the importance of course management and adaptability.

In planning your visit, keep in mind the course’s evolving condition and adjust expectations accordingly. The Hamptons Golf Course presents a practical, accessible option for those exploring golf in southeastern Virginia, where affordability pairs with a functional design aimed at diverse skill levels.

Course Highlights

The Hamptons Golf Course stands out for its three distinct 9-hole loops, combining open space and water features that influence strategy. Despite challenges with drainage and green conditions, the layout offers varied playing options and a practical test for budget-conscious golfers.

If you’re looking to play on a golf course with the worst greens possible. This is the place for you. All 28 when the putter is counted are pitted from disease. Putting on these greens would be like putting on the moon. The tees are just as bad. Unleveled and covered in divots. Then there are spots on all 3 courses that keep water year round. They might as well be considered as water hazards at this point. It’s time to replace the current superintendent of this golf course. He has had his chance. He doesn’t know what he’s doing. Year after year he loses the greens. Other golf courses are not having this type of issues. That’s because they have educated and experienced superintendents running them. #CityofHampton replace this superintendent.

Really rude and snobby worker started yelling at us!! Went walking on the trail by the golf course, and accidentally went the wrong way. However, instead of letting us know we were going the wrong way so we knew for next time he was very rude, and unprofessional.

Some off the rudest people work here. Conditions are horrible and when you mention that they have standing water on the course with no hazard markings they respond with not my problem, its up to maintenance

The hamptons is the worst golf course you will ever play in your life time. If it rains at any point in time, say it rains some random day in may the fairways at the hamptons will be under water until it freezes over in the winter time. Every single green of this 27 hole course has moon craters all over it not to mention you have to absolutely full swing your putter to hit the ball 2 feet. You would be able to putt a ball in the middle of a corn field better than you are going to be able to putt here. Tee boxes are terrible. Bunkers are cement. Service is terrible. The starter who acts like he owns the place is a complete gentitalia head. He talks to you like you are a dog and he is your master. And when I say “talk” I mean he yells. He yells at you not in a friendly way. You could be walking down the cart part at this course and he is going to scream at you as if you are walking incorrectly. This place is a complete joke and it needs to be shut down. It should be hit with false advertising because this is not a golf course it’s a couple fields with water all over it and a little circle at the end of each field with divots in it that your could roll your ankle on. The hamptons is a complete and utter failure and disrespectful to the golf community

This golf course is going down hill fast. Staff is rude and course conditions are terrible. After playing this course for 25+ years I can honestly say that the current conditions are some of the worst they've had.

Keep in mind this is a city owned course so you need to have the proper expectations. It can be very wet if you go after a rain event. Driving range is far away from the starting tee boxes and leaves a lot to be desired. It is very reasonably priced and a cool layout. Not very long. It has 27 holes. I usually show up and the pick 9 I want to play. Compared to other courses it is really a 2 or 3 but for a city course and the price I am rating it at 4.

I played here yesterday (Friday) and it was quite enjoyable; especially, for the price. The landscaping is nicer than some of the people in these reviews would leave you to believe. I will definitely be a returning as a regular. I had lunch afterwards and the fish and chips were great; although, the tartar sauce tasted of cinnamon. The only downsides (very little) is some of the staff are quite grumpy (you work at a golf course, dudes, enjoy it!) and some of the greens had quite a few divots that golfers didn't repair.
