Hamptons Golf Course

Hampton, Virginia, USASoutheastern Virginia

Hamptons Golf Course in Hampton, VA, offers a 27-hole public layout featuring three distinct nine-hole tracks through parkland terrain interspersed with wetlands. It provides an approachable, flexible experience for golfers of varying skills, with moderate length and a casual setting.

Course Overview

Located at 320 Butler Farm Road in Hampton, Virginia, Hamptons Golf Course offers a sprawling 27-hole layout managed by the city, making it an accessible option for locals and visitors seeking affordable golf. The course’s three nine-hole tracks present varied challenges over a primarily parkland-style setting, with flat to gently rolling terrain intersected by wetlands that demand thoughtful shot placement, especially after rain. While the landscape benefits from pockets of mature trees and open fairways, drainage issues can affect playability during wetter periods, requiring players to adapt their strategy on softer turf.

Hamptons balances a relaxed atmosphere with a mix of holes that invite both casual rounds and modest competitive play. The course length is moderate, appealing to golfers across skill levels but especially suitable for those who prefer a forgiving challenge rather than demanding length or complex features. Players will find a number of approachable short par-4s and accessible par-3s scattered among the three courses, though the putting surfaces have received mixed feedback due to inconsistent conditions.

Amenities at Hamptons include a driving range positioned away from the starting holes, providing a place to warm up despite some distance from the clubhouse area. The pro shop and snack bar serve the basic needs of visitors, and a casual dining spot on-site offers convenience after a round. Golfers are advised to bring sturdy shoes appropriate for potentially soft turf, particularly in the spring and fall months when rain may linger on the grounds.

Hamptons Golf Course stands as a practical choice for city golfers or those traveling through Hampton seeking value and variety on a public course. While the course does experience maintenance and service challenges at times, its openness and flexibility—allowing players to pick which nine holes to play—make it a flexible option for quick outings or stretch sessions. Visitors should plan for occasional uneven turf and variable green speeds but can expect a straightforward layout that favors shot-makers willing to work within its conditions.

Course Highlights

The course’s three separate nine-hole loops offer variety and flexibility, winding through a parkland landscape interspersed by wetlands that influence strategy. While the greens can be uneven and the course susceptible to rain-triggered softness, the layout encourages a balanced approach between accuracy and distance. The driving range, though set apart from the clubhouse, provides a useful practice area. This municipal facility serves as an accessible venue for players prioritizing value and a laid-back round.

Keep in mind this is a city owned course so you need to have the proper expectations. It can be very wet if you go after a rain event. Driving range is far away from the starting tee boxes and leaves a lot to be desired. It is very reasonably priced and a cool layout. Not very long. It has 27 holes. I usually show up and the pick 9 I want to play. Compared to other courses it is really a 2 or 3 but for a city course and the price I am rating it at 4.

I played here yesterday (Friday) and it was quite enjoyable; especially, for the price. The landscaping is nicer than some of the people in these reviews would leave you to believe. I will definitely be a returning as a regular. I had lunch afterwards and the fish and chips were great; although, the tartar sauce tasted of cinnamon. The only downsides (very little) is some of the staff are quite grumpy (you work at a golf course, dudes, enjoy it!) and some of the greens had quite a few divots that golfers didn't repair.

Really rude and snobby worker started yelling at us!! Went walking on the trail by the golf course, and accidentally went the wrong way. However, instead of letting us know we were going the wrong way so we knew for next time he was very rude, and unprofessional.

This golf course is going down hill fast. Staff is rude and course conditions are terrible. After playing this course for 25+ years I can honestly say that the current conditions are some of the worst they've had.

The hamptons is the worst golf course you will ever play in your life time. If it rains at any point in time, say it rains some random day in may the fairways at the hamptons will be under water until it freezes over in the winter time. Every single green of this 27 hole course has moon craters all over it not to mention you have to absolutely full swing your putter to hit the ball 2 feet. You would be able to putt a ball in the middle of a corn field better than you are going to be able to putt here. Tee boxes are terrible. Bunkers are cement. Service is terrible. The starter who acts like he owns the place is a complete gentitalia head. He talks to you like you are a dog and he is your master. And when I say “talk” I mean he yells. He yells at you not in a friendly way. You could be walking down the cart part at this course and he is going to scream at you as if you are walking incorrectly. This place is a complete joke and it needs to be shut down. It should be hit with false advertising because this is not a golf course it’s a couple fields with water all over it and a little circle at the end of each field with divots in it that your could roll your ankle on. The hamptons is a complete and utter failure and disrespectful to the golf community

If you’re looking to play on a golf course with the worst greens possible. This is the place for you. All 28 when the putter is counted are pitted from disease. Putting on these greens would be like putting on the moon. The tees are just as bad. Unleveled and covered in divots. Then there are spots on all 3 courses that keep water year round. They might as well be considered as water hazards at this point. It’s time to replace the current superintendent of this golf course. He has had his chance. He doesn’t know what he’s doing. Year after year he loses the greens. Other golf courses are not having this type of issues. That’s because they have educated and experienced superintendents running them. #CityofHampton replace this superintendent.

Some off the rudest people work here. Conditions are horrible and when you mention that they have standing water on the course with no hazard markings they respond with not my problem, its up to maintenance
