Chesapeake Golf Club

Chesapeake, Virginia, USASoutheastern Virginia

Chesapeake Golf Club delivers an accessible 18-hole public course experience within an urban setting. The parkland-style layout demands careful shot strategy and suits golfers seeking a convenient, budget-friendly round amid evolving course conditions.

Course Overview

Chesapeake Golf Club offers a challenging 18-hole layout set within the urban environment of Chesapeake, Virginia. This public course spreads across relatively flat terrain marked by a combination of fairways edged with mature trees and areas where the course contours blend with the cityscape. It is designed to serve a broad spectrum of golfers, though its current conditions and upkeep have drawn mixed responses regarding playability and overall experience.

Players encounter a course that requires strategic navigation as bunkers and water come into play on key holes. The layout features a traditional parkland style, where shot placement and course management remain pivotal. While the terrain lacks elevation changes commonly found in more scenic destinations, Chesapeake’s setting presents a straightforward rather than scenic golfing venue where focus gravitates to shot execution.

Around the course, amenities include a modest clubhouse facility geared toward casual dining and golf shop essentials. The course allows walking and golf cart rentals, although recent reports suggest some carts may be older and in need of repairs. Walking the course demands durable shoes as some areas become soft or muddy after rain, typical of the region’s soil and drainage characteristics.

Chesapeake Golf Club’s position within a densely developed area means golfers should prepare for potential urban interruptions, including proximate housing and visible infrastructure. While the setting may not evoke tranquil nature, the location provides a convenient course choice for local players and visitors seeking accessible golf without a long drive.

This course appeals most to golfers who value affordability and the opportunity for regular practice rounds rather than those seeking pristine conditions or a highly refined golf resort experience. Players should anticipate course conditions to fluctuate seasonally and prepare for firmness and surface variances especially following rainy weather.

Visitors aiming to play Chesapeake Golf Club will find a challenging test that rewards patience and smart shot selection amid an honest, if modest, golf journey through a compact city course.

Course Highlights

The course presents a classic parkland design with a blend of tree-lined fairways and strategic bunkering. While terrain is generally flat, water hazards and selective rough influence shot-making decisions. The urban setting shapes the course atmosphere, placing emphasis on gameplay over scenic distractions.

If you actually care about good golf courses this is the worst. Greens looked like chili, carts in terrible conditions, and 57 dollars to play in a TERRIBLY kept course. Not to mention the poor quality of players getting black out drunk. Save your money and go elsewhere. Unless they let you play for $5.00. The staff was good though!

BEWARE! Not even 1 star should be allowed for this. We just had a golf tournament here yesterday and my god this was the worst experience I have ever had in terms of playing conditions on a golf course. I can’t believe they let this tournament be held here in these conditions. This is embarrassing. I have played here for 20+ years and I wouldn’t even call this a golf course anymore at this point. They shouldn’t even allowed to be open in these conditions, let alone have people pay to play in these conditions. You can’t blame the weather for conditions like this. This is pure neglect. No course nearby is even close to these terrible conditions. Nearly every green is unplayable. Most tee boxes and basically all greens are full of weeds and fungus if anything at all. And if it rains here anytime within a few days of your tee time, be prepared for a mud fest and cart path only, although this course has never really drained very well prior to these conditions. The pictures speak for themselves and it is like this on nearly every single hole. It is coming to a point where they should just think about closing the course down for a major maintenance period or they should just close all together. Even the clubhouse is superiorly outdated inside and out and the exterior of the building is extremely filthy. Battlefield Golf Club is the only public golf course in Chesapeake worth going to at this point and Battlefield Golf Club is in good condition!

Review of Chesapeake Golf Course: A Chaotic Experience I visited Chesapeake Golf Course hoping for a relaxing day on the links, but what I encountered was nothing short of a nightmare. The greens were an absolute disaster—bumpy, slow, and patchy, making putting feel like navigating a minefield. The fairways were no better, choked with deep weeds and littered with goose droppings that made every step a slippery gamble. The sand traps? More like mud pits, with wet, clumpy sand that rendered them unplayable. The golf carts were in deplorable condition—rickety, with failing brakes and seats that smelled like mildew. Navigation was a challenge, as the course layout was confusing, and I found myself getting lost between holes. The scenery wasn’t much to look at either, with graffiti scrawled across signs and benches, and used syringes scattered in the rough, hinting at the area’s darker underbelly. Safety was a serious concern. The course felt like a hangout for local gangs, with groups loitering near the clubhouse and eyeing players suspiciously. I heard rumors of a shooting on the back nine the week prior, and the atmosphere was tense. To top it off, one of my playing partners slipped in the mud near the 14th hole and twisted an ankle, while another took a stray divot to the shin, leaving us all battered by the end. Between the crime, the deplorable conditions, and the constant hazards, Chesapeake Golf Course is an experience I’d never wish on anyone. Save your money and your sanity—play literally anywhere else.

I flew in for my dad’s birthday looking to get out and play a round of golf and a nice course for cheap. This course exceeded our expectations. The greens, tee boxes, and fairways were in great shape. Although the course layout was a little tricky it made it fun to play. The staff was very friendly and the maintenance crew was working hard.

I've been playing this course since 2003. I felt it was nicer back then, but it is still an enjoyable course to play for the cost. I would like to see some of the old bunkers come back and be kept in better shape. Course design is nice and challenging, but not a fan of how close the houses are.
