Chesapeake Golf Club

Chesapeake, Virginia, USASoutheastern Virginia

Chesapeake Golf Club provides a straightforward, public 18-hole golf experience within an urban setting. Its parkland-style layout blends modest water hazards and tree-lined fairways to create a practical course suited for beginners and casual players seeking a no-frills game close to city amenities.

Course Overview

Chesapeake Golf Club is a public 18-hole course located in Chesapeake, Virginia, offering an accessible and straightforward golfing experience in the heart of the city. The course layout winds through a predominantly flat landscape punctuated by patches of mature trees and waterways, creating pockets of interest while maintaining a traditional parkland feel. Its design favors players seeking a no-frills round, with fairways that demand accurate tee shots but avoid extreme length or punishing hazards.

Set against an urban backdrop, the course’s scenery is functional more than scenic, with occasional glimpses of water hazards and tree-lined corridors providing modest strategic challenges. The terrain allows for walking, though players should anticipate firm footing in drier months and possible soft areas following rain, as drainage can be uneven in places. The green complexes tend to be modest in size and straightforward in contour, making them approachable for golfers of all skill levels, though pace of play and course maintenance have been reported as inconsistent.

Playability is geared toward casual players and beginners looking for an affordable and quick round near Chesapeake’s city center. While the course avoids high difficulty, some holes feature bunkers and water elements that require a clear game plan to keep scores manageable. Players should consider bringing cleated shoes for stability during wetter spells.

Facilities are basic with a simple clubhouse providing essentials but little in the way of luxury amenities. Cart rentals are available but many patrons favor walking, especially during cooler weather. Chesapeake Golf Club’s offering is a practical choice for those wanting to fit a round into a busy schedule or experiment with course management without the pressures of championship conditions.

Golfers planning a visit should prepare for variability in course and grounds upkeep, and temper expectations concerning aesthetics and advanced challenges. The site has a working staff intent on maintaining playability, albeit within budgetary limits. Overall, Chesapeake Golf Club serves as a serviceable urban golf venue where the focus remains on the fundamentals of the game rather than scenic flair or architectural innovation.

Course Highlights

Chesapeake Golf Club’s 18 holes feature a classic parkland style with a mix of tree-lined fairways and small water hazards. The course is known for being approachable to novices while offering enough variety to keep casual golfers engaged. Its proximity to urban Chesapeake makes it a convenient option for quick rounds. The design does not emphasize architectural flourishes but aims for straightforward playability with pockets of challenge such as modest bunkering and strategic water placements.

I've been playing this course since 2003. I felt it was nicer back then, but it is still an enjoyable course to play for the cost. I would like to see some of the old bunkers come back and be kept in better shape. Course design is nice and challenging, but not a fan of how close the houses are.

If you actually care about good golf courses this is the worst. Greens looked like chili, carts in terrible conditions, and 57 dollars to play in a TERRIBLY kept course. Not to mention the poor quality of players getting black out drunk. Save your money and go elsewhere. Unless they let you play for $5.00. The staff was good though!

BEWARE! Not even 1 star should be allowed for this. We just had a golf tournament here yesterday and my god this was the worst experience I have ever had in terms of playing conditions on a golf course. I can’t believe they let this tournament be held here in these conditions. This is embarrassing. I have played here for 20+ years and I wouldn’t even call this a golf course anymore at this point. They shouldn’t even allowed to be open in these conditions, let alone have people pay to play in these conditions. You can’t blame the weather for conditions like this. This is pure neglect. No course nearby is even close to these terrible conditions. Nearly every green is unplayable. Most tee boxes and basically all greens are full of weeds and fungus if anything at all. And if it rains here anytime within a few days of your tee time, be prepared for a mud fest and cart path only, although this course has never really drained very well prior to these conditions. The pictures speak for themselves and it is like this on nearly every single hole. It is coming to a point where they should just think about closing the course down for a major maintenance period or they should just close all together. Even the clubhouse is superiorly outdated inside and out and the exterior of the building is extremely filthy. Battlefield Golf Club is the only public golf course in Chesapeake worth going to at this point and Battlefield Golf Club is in good condition!

Review of Chesapeake Golf Course: A Chaotic Experience I visited Chesapeake Golf Course hoping for a relaxing day on the links, but what I encountered was nothing short of a nightmare. The greens were an absolute disaster—bumpy, slow, and patchy, making putting feel like navigating a minefield. The fairways were no better, choked with deep weeds and littered with goose droppings that made every step a slippery gamble. The sand traps? More like mud pits, with wet, clumpy sand that rendered them unplayable. The golf carts were in deplorable condition—rickety, with failing brakes and seats that smelled like mildew. Navigation was a challenge, as the course layout was confusing, and I found myself getting lost between holes. The scenery wasn’t much to look at either, with graffiti scrawled across signs and benches, and used syringes scattered in the rough, hinting at the area’s darker underbelly. Safety was a serious concern. The course felt like a hangout for local gangs, with groups loitering near the clubhouse and eyeing players suspiciously. I heard rumors of a shooting on the back nine the week prior, and the atmosphere was tense. To top it off, one of my playing partners slipped in the mud near the 14th hole and twisted an ankle, while another took a stray divot to the shin, leaving us all battered by the end. Between the crime, the deplorable conditions, and the constant hazards, Chesapeake Golf Course is an experience I’d never wish on anyone. Save your money and your sanity—play literally anywhere else.

I flew in for my dad’s birthday looking to get out and play a round of golf and a nice course for cheap. This course exceeded our expectations. The greens, tee boxes, and fairways were in great shape. Although the course layout was a little tricky it made it fun to play. The staff was very friendly and the maintenance crew was working hard.
