Shennecossett Golf Course in Groton blends approachable play with refreshing water views along the Thames River. This 18-hole public layout offers strategic bunkering, walk-friendly terrain, and a balanced test suited for a broad range of golfers.
Course Overview
Shennecossett Golf Course in Groton, Connecticut, offers a compact yet engaging test of golf with a layout that balances walkable convenience and scenic variety. An 18-hole public course, Shennecossett invites golfers looking for a medium-difficulty challenge framed by New England’s coastal charm. The routing moves across relatively short holes that demand strategic shot placement more than brute distance, making it approachable for a wide range of skill levels while still requiring focus from low handicappers.
The course’s setting along the Thames River imbues several holes with refreshing water views, particularly on the back nine where glimpses of the waterfront elevate the experience. While the terrain remains generally flat, generous bunkering comes into play, guarding fairways and greens with classic hazard placement that keeps players honest. The greens present moderate undulations, providing a fair challenge without overwhelming the casual player.
Walkers will appreciate the course’s compact footprint. Although golf carts are available, often the most practical way to enjoy the day is on foot, giving players the chance to absorb the course’s quiet atmosphere before afternoon breezes sweep through. The maintenance of the bunkers and greens is generally well regarded, though fairways can show wear during dry spells, reflecting the course’s municipal-style upkeep.
With a convenient location off Plant Street, Shennecossett is a favored spot for locals balancing tight schedules or stopping in for a quick round. The clubhouse offers basic amenities including a bar and pro shop. Operational hours close by early evening, so planning an early tee time is advised to ensure completion of all 18 holes.
Though it does not claim architectural pedigree or expansive scale, Shennecossett’s straightforward layout, coupled with occasional scenic water views, makes for an enjoyable and accessible round. Those seeking a quick, moderately challenging game near Groton will find it a practical and pleasant stop to sharpen their short game amid the changing coastal backdrop.
Course Highlights
Water views on the back nine from holes overlooking the Thames River, strategic bunkers that challenge shot placement, and a course layout that rewards thoughtful play rather than distance. I play here for convenience but it's the last time I pull into this course. Like many others in the area I work a 9-5 and in the spring you can get 9 in before dark! The course has a 6pm close time advertised but if you're planning on making it close to 5:30 don't even try because their pro-shop attendant "must have left early" and "under no circumstance" can you play because the guy at the pro-shop left and you can't be charged at the bar or open up the drawer during their OPEN hours... This has happened multiple times and have encountered different rude rangers with similar explanations but the same attitude💀 Having worked at multiple courses if anyone had the same attitude some of the outside personnel have at this course, they'd be out of a job.

Busy busy day before rain forecast so we couldn’t finish our 18 but we did drive the cart the unfinished last 7 holes. #16 view is a beautiful water view so don’t miss it. Tee box and greens can be close so mind the group behind you. Lots of bunkers in the fairways keep it challenging.

Donald Ross is allowed to make mistakes. This is one. Prepare to hear “fore” in your dreams for the next week. This course is too short for its own good, the staff is old and grumpy, but the drinks are cheap. The back 9 barely sees the water yet it’s said to be wildly scenic. I don’t hate the course but don’t expect a top tier course by any means. Just another muni

I played there last Friday and had a great time. First, the weather couldn't have been better; especially for November. The bunkers and greens were in great shape. The fairways were in okay shape, but after the drought this summer, I would say they did a good job maintaining them . Overall, I had a great time and would recommend the course.
