Shennecossett Golf Course

Groton, Connecticut, USASoutheastern Connecticut

Shennecossett Golf Course in Groton, CT is a classic 18-hole public layout that blends links-style coastal elements with accessible playability. With strategic bunkers and water-adjacent holes, it offers both challenge and charm for golfers across all levels.

Course Overview

Set along the shoreline of Groton, Connecticut, Shennecossett Golf Course offers an 18-hole layout that challenges and invites players with a balanced, traditional design. This public course, owned by the Town of Groton, presents links-style characteristics, tracing the contours of the coast while capturing some of the breezes off the Thames River. The front nine features tighter fairways and strategically placed bunkers that demand accuracy off the tee, while the back nine opens into wider vistas with holes that run adjacent to water, providing subtle visual distractions and natural wind tests that influence club selection and shot shape.

Playing Shennecossett, golfers encounter a course that accommodates a range of skill levels but tends to reward thoughtful play and shot placement over brute power. Fairways are moderately wide but interspersed with bunkers not just guarding the greens, but also lurking mid-fairway. The greens are true and receptive, with subtle breaks that challenge putting without overwhelming the average player. While yardage is on the shorter side, this lends itself to a faster pace of play and allows beginners and intermediate golfers to enjoy confidence on the course, making it a practical choice for locals and visitors seeking an accessible but engaging experience.

Beyond the golf itself, the course is supported by a modest clubhouse and a friendly staff dedicated to keeping rounds moving smoothly. Carts are available, though the layout invites walking for those interested in a classic seaside golf experience. Many players comment on the course’s scenic back nine, especially around the 16th hole, where water views heighten the sense of place.

Golfers planning a visit should arrive prepared for variable coastal winds and consider timing rounds to avoid peak busy periods. The pro shop maintains a straightforward operation during daylight hours, and the course’s community atmosphere makes it well-suited for both solo rounds and casual group play. Shennecossett remains a reliable, no-frills gem that offers a solid test with a coastal edge in Southeastern Connecticut.

Course Highlights

Shennecossett’s signature elements include its links-style coastal setting, frequent wind influences, and a stretch of holes along the water on the back nine. The course balances fairway bunkers with inviting green complexes that reward strategic approach shots. The 16th hole commands attention with panoramic river views and a slight dogleg framing a challenging green complex.

I play here for convenience but it's the last time I pull into this course. Like many others in the area I work a 9-5 and in the spring you can get 9 in before dark! The course has a 6pm close time advertised but if you're planning on making it close to 5:30 don't even try because their pro-shop attendant "must have left early" and "under no circumstance" can you play because the guy at the pro-shop left and you can't be charged at the bar or open up the drawer during their OPEN hours... This has happened multiple times and have encountered different rude rangers with similar explanations but the same attitude💀 Having worked at multiple courses if anyone had the same attitude some of the outside personnel have at this course, they'd be out of a job.

Donald Ross is allowed to make mistakes. This is one. Prepare to hear “fore” in your dreams for the next week. This course is too short for its own good, the staff is old and grumpy, but the drinks are cheap. The back 9 barely sees the water yet it’s said to be wildly scenic. I don’t hate the course but don’t expect a top tier course by any means. Just another muni

I played there last Friday and had a great time. First, the weather couldn't have been better; especially for November. The bunkers and greens were in great shape. The fairways were in okay shape, but after the drought this summer, I would say they did a good job maintaining them . Overall, I had a great time and would recommend the course.

Busy busy day before rain forecast so we couldn’t finish our 18 but we did drive the cart the unfinished last 7 holes. #16 view is a beautiful water view so don’t miss it. Tee box and greens can be close so mind the group behind you. Lots of bunkers in the fairways keep it challenging.
