Newport News Golf Club at Deer Run

Newport News, Virginia, USASoutheast Virginia

Newport News Golf Club at Deer Run offers an approachable 18-hole parkland experience designed for both practice and casual rounds. Its accessible layout and comprehensive practice facilities provide a practical setting for golfers of all levels to enjoy Virginia’s municipal golf scene.

Course Overview

Newport News Golf Club at Deer Run offers a straightforward, municipal-style golfing experience centered on accessibility and practice opportunities. Located in Newport News, Virginia, this 18-hole layout functions primarily as a public course, catering to a broad spectrum of players looking to sharpen their skills or enjoy a casual round. The course’s design leans towards a traditional parkland style, with tree-lined fairways and modest elevation changes that shape each hole’s character without overwhelming the player.

The terrain is fairly open, allowing natural sunlight to provide clear visibility and a welcoming atmosphere throughout the day. While the layout does not demand advanced shot-making or present significant strategic complexity, it emphasizes fundamentals—accuracy off the tee and solid approach shots are rewarded here. The course’s relatively short to mid-length holes make it approachable for beginners and high handicaps while leaving room for lower handicappers to challenge their short game and putting.

Practice facilities are a key component of the club’s appeal. The driving range and short game areas offer ample space for warming up or working through swing adjustments with the help of on-site instructors. Lessons are available and well-regarded, supporting players intent on improvement.

A simple, well-kept clubhouse provides a comfortable base for participants, with clean locker rooms and a pro shop to handle gear needs. Hospitality is generally friendly, though some reviews have noted room for improvement in staff engagement.

Golf carts are offered but walking is encouraged, particularly during less busy times. The time of day and weather can affect course conditions, so early tee times are recommended for a smoother experience. While the facilities operate under a municipal model, green fees remain affordable, making Newport News Golf Club an accessible option for local residents and visitors seeking an unpretentious round.

This course suits golfers who value practice, steady play, and a welcoming pace over elaborate design or championship challenge. There is no shortage of straightforward holes that reward clean shots and foster enjoyment without pressure. For those planning a visit, a focus on timing and expectations will ensure a productive and pleasant round.

Course Highlights

The course is known for its open, tree-lined fairways and accessible layout, supporting a blend of beginner-friendly holes with opportunities to advance short game skills. Helpful instructors and ample practice areas make it a strong community resource. While not architecturally complex, it serves as a reliable venue for steady rounds and skill development.

Paid for 18 holes, only got through 7 because it started storming, and they wouldn’t issue me a rain check. Never heard of a golf course not giving rain checks — what a joke of a business. I called the general manager (Woods Woolwine) about it and he did not care to make things right at all. On top of this, the Marshaller on the course was incredibly rude. I had a friend with me from out of state so we were using the same clubs and she told us we have to rent another set of clubs. Overall, this place acts like it’s a fancy and boujee course, when it actually is just awful and over-priced, due to terrible and rude leadership and staff.

Have been here pretty consistently for a while and EVERY SINGLE TIME I go I get a lot of attitude from every single staff member that works there and I am completely fed up with it and will not be going back. The nicest person at the complex is the employee that cleans the golf carts, it’s absolutely pathetic how rude a bunch of old pro shop workers can be, if this was my golf club every one of them would be fired immediately. Do better Deer Run.

I get off work. I get there at 4 o’clock wanting to rent a pull cart to play nine holes. They tell me it’s too late now there are only two of us so I wanna rent a cart for 18 holes. We don’t rent any carts for 18 holes past 356 It’s 4 o’clock so they can’t do that. They tell me I can play nine holes for $25 and ride. Well, to play 18 it’s 32. It makes no sense. That’s pretty obviousThere’s only two of us it’s gonna take us probably maybe three hours to play 18 holes Carts have to be back in by eight something to walk nine holes it’s $16 but the play 18 it’s the same rate WHAT!!! Whoever makes these rules do not play golf It’s the Newport News city course. It’s not Williamsburg country club by a longshot. SERIOUSLY!!!!!!! For a city course there’s way too many Rules

Usually, a great place to practice and play. However, I'm disappointed to see that the grounds crew has decided not to cut hole locations on the practice green or chipping green the last few weeks. Hopefully, it's only due to the heat. If not, I might need to look into a new place to practice.

This course doesn’t care about expanding the game to younger generations. Wouldn’t let my son ride with my group on a weekday. The guys in the pro shop need to get off of their high horse and show a little compassion. It’s not like this course is on the upper scale of courses in the area.

I visited Newport News Golf Club recently to hit a few balls at the range. I've previously taken golf lessons here. Their instructors are great and helped me with my swing. The clubhouse is clean and well maintained as is the rest of the course. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Some of the golfers are not as friendly. Prices are very affordable. Overall this seems to be a popular course for good reason.
