The Course at Sewanee
Set amid Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau, The Course at Sewanee is a scenic 9-hole public layout blending strategic design with natural elevation shifts. Challenging yet inviting, this mountain-side course offers a fresh take for golfers seeking a compact test with elevated views and variable wind conditions.
Course Overview
The Course at Sewanee offers a distinct golf experience shaped by its mountain ridge setting in Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau. This 9-hole public course balances strategic variety with natural contours, creating a layout that invites both thoughtful play and visual reward. Measuring just under 3,200 yards from the back tees and playing to a par of 35, it presents a compact yet diverse challenge well suited for golfers of all levels. The course’s elevated terrain commands gentle breezes that test timing and club selection while providing sweeping views over wooded hills and distant valleys, enhancing every shot.
Designed with an emphasis on playability and interest, the routing avoids monotony through a mix of risk-reward par 4s and testing par 3s, including a demanding uphill hole that challenges both distance control and wind judgment. The putting surfaces are known for their subtle breaks, encouraging careful reading and precision on each green. Fairways are maintained to support a variety of shots, appealing to players who appreciate shot-making over sheer power.
Facilities around the clubhouse emphasize a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere. Practice areas provide ample space to hone swings and putting before taking on the course. While modest, the clubhouse serves as a friendly hub for golfers wrapping up their rounds or gearing up for play, staffed by members who contribute to the inclusive vibe.
Visitors will find The Course at Sewanee a refreshing alternative to larger resorts and sprawling complexes, where the interplay between elevation, natural features, and thoughtful course design creates a memorable round. It suits golfers seeking a testing yet approachable outing on terrain that speaks to both the nuances of the game and the beauty of this distinctive region.
Planning your visit, it’s advisable to bring comfortable shoes suited for uneven ground given the hillside routing, and to prepare for variable wind conditions. Tee times are easy to secure, making this a convenient destination for both local players and those passing through the area. At The Course at Sewanee, every hole offers a quiet challenge framed by Tennessee’s upland landscape.
Course Highlights

We’d go to school here based on the quality of the course at Sewanee alone! What a setting!?! Wow. What a treat this ridge top gem is to play and for bargain prices IMO. Wonderful staff and facilities all around. Nothing not to like. Cliffside holes get the press but par 4 8th is one of greatest par 4s in golf. Gil Hanse public courses don’t grow as on trees. Play it

This course is, as said by multiple people in my party, a hidden gem. I visited with a group of PGA professionals and they had a great time playing the course as scratch golfers. Each hole had a different unexpected layout. I played from the forward tees and as a girl had trouble on one of the par 3s which was playing 165 yards uphill with the wind-quite the challenge, yet I also had a driveable par-4. Overall we loved the course and pro shop area, but I had some issues in the bar/restaurant area. Obviously it is a small place so they don’t have everything, but I ordered the “Superfood Salad” and I got something entirely different. There was no arugula (instead iceberg lettuce), no avacado, and quinoa seemed half cooked. They added in grapes, day old pineapple, watermelon, and melon chunks- clearly from a fruit salad platter. This was NOT on the menu and if I would have known this is what I was getting, I would have not ordered it at all. I am allergic to both grapes and pineapple so this was not appreciated. I am still giving 5 stars for the golf course but noting that restaurant needs a simpler menu & some extra help

This might be the best golf experience I've had in a while. From Matt at the front desk to the driving range to the immaculate putting and chipping greens to the bar - and I haven't even mentioned the course yet. This Gil Hanse-refurbished 9-hole track is a complete joy, managing to hit that sweet spot so beloved of Alistair McKenzie - to be both challenging to the better player and fun for the deep amateur. Practice putting before you start. I was on the first hole, a par 5, in regulation - only to four-putt. The turf was so springy, the air so breezy and light, that I did not care one bit.

The course is in great shape. They are still working on a few bunkers, but overall, as a nine hole course, this is a must play. Very friendly staff. Can't wait to go back.
