Yahara Hills Golf Course

Madison, Wisconsin, USASouth Central Wisconsin

Yahara Hills Golf Course offers two 18-hole parkland-style layouts featuring large greens and mature trees that shape a classic Wisconsin golfing experience. Ideal for golfers seeking both approachable fairways and strategic challenges, Yahara Hills provides solid value with a traditional setting and varied play.

Course Overview

Yahara Hills Golf Course, situated at 7051 Millpond Rd in Madison, Wisconsin, offers a compelling 36-hole layout split into East and West courses, catering to a range of golfers seeking variety and challenge. This public facility presents a classic parkland design marked by expansive, well-maintained fairways and notably large greens that invite strategic shot-making and thoughtful putting. The landscape is framed by mature hardwoods that define the holes and serve as natural obstacles, creating a distinctive rhythm from tee to green.

The East Course, often favored by locals, stands out for its blend of length and precision. Golfers will find wide fairways that ease navigation for mid-level players, alongside bunkers and rough that demand accuracy. Large greens on the East side encourage a nuanced approach, rewarding players who can read subtle breaks and pace their strokes accordingly. Meanwhile, the West Course ups the test with slightly tighter corridors and more penal rough, making it a suitable challenge for low-handicap players seeking to sharpen their game.

While the course overall is accessible for a broad spectrum of skill levels, its maintenance presents mixed feedback. Fairways are routinely kept in good shape, though the bunkers on both courses have received criticism for inconsistent conditions, occasionally resembling hazards rather than strategically placed sand traps. Golfers planning a visit should be prepared for these variable conditions, particularly rough that can prove demanding.

Yahara Hills supports a relaxed yet focused pace of play, with staff attentive to ensuring rounds move steadily. The course allows walking, though golfers are advised to wear sturdy shoes due to the terrain and occasional soft ground. Riding carts are available, but walking offers a better connection to the natural surroundings and the undulating topography.

Overall, Yahara Hills presents a solid outing with two distinct 18-hole courses that provide both playability and a chance to test diverse shot-making skills. The mixture of large greens, mature trees, and open fairways crafts a memorable experience for golfers who appreciate a traditional Wisconsin parkland layout. Emerging as a value-oriented golf option in the Madison area, Yahara Hills invites players to engage thoughtfully with its courses and plan accordingly for its nuanced challenges.

Course Highlights

Two distinct 18-hole courses offer contrasting challenges: the East Course features wide fairways and large greens suited for a broad range of players, while the West Course presents tighter fairways and punishing rough for seasoned golfers. Mature hardwood trees line both layouts, framing holes and adding tactical complexity. The generous greens demand precise putting, making course management critical. While bunker maintenance varies, the overall conditioning rewards thoughtful shot selection. Yahara Hills stands out as a strong regional value with traditional parkland styling and a peaceful, natural setting.

The course was in really good shape and the greens were medium fast. We played at a decent pace with no pressure from behind and not having to wait for any group ahead of us. The price of $63 with the cart was reasonable. All of the staff I interacted with were pleasant and helpful. Thankfully the wind was blowing to the north so we were not treated to any landfill aromas. Always a plus at Yahara Hills. All in all a pleasant day.

Big greens, wide open fairways, a good place to work on your game. Bunkers need alot of love or they just need to get rid of some of them as they’ve effectively become waste areas. Feel like the value is not there for what they’re charging until they figure out the bunker situation. Nobody wants to guess what you’re supposed to do when you’re in a greenside bunker full of weeds and hard pan.

We were yelled at walking in, rushed the entire time, and paired with two people randomly with no warning. Only come here if you are a PGA level golfer, otherwise you will be too slow and they will let you know

Really surprised by how nice the East Course was. I know that was the more popular one, will have to try the West Course next time. Greens were fast and challenging...large greens. Beautiful trees line the course and it's fair. Super value and a worth a visit and play. Hope they can keep 36 holes open. *Update: after playing here many times now I do have some updated observations. There is no bunker upkeep..maybe one ok bunker on a par 3. The rough is very punishing..hard to find your ball or hit out of, if you end up in it.*
