Gray's Crossing Golf Course in Truckee, California, offers an 18-hole mountain-style layout that challenges players with elevation changes, strategic shot-making, and stunning pine-studded scenery. Course Overview
Gray's Crossing Golf Course offers an 18-hole championship layout that challenges and rewards players across skill levels. Located in Truckee, California, this mountain-style course spreads out across a rugged landscape shaped by the Sierra Nevada’s natural contours. The design maximizes elevation changes, with holes tracing ridges and valleys, providing strategic shot options and stunning panoramas of towering pines and distant peaks. The course’s terrain encourages thoughtful club selection, with fairways that weave through dense forest and elevation shifts that test distance control and creativity.
Playability at Gray's Crossing balances challenge with accessibility. While the rough can be demanding for wayward shots, the fairways remain generous enough to give intermediate players room to maneuver. The greens are consistently well-maintained, exhibiting subtle breaks and complex contours that invite precise putting rather than overpowering speed. Several holes allow aggressive lines off the tee, especially for longer hitters who can take advantage of downhill slopes and reachable par 4s. Conversely, more conservative players can find safer routes that emphasize accuracy over length.
The setting reflects the rugged beauty of Truckee’s high country, where crisp mountain air mingles with the scent of pine. Wind often plays a subtle role, encouraging players to adjust their tempo and trajectory accordingly. Adjacent to the clubhouse, the practice facilities provide ample warm-up opportunities, though some players note areas for improvement like hydration availability near the range.
Gray's Crossing operates as a private club with a strong focus on member experience, supported by attentive staff and quality service. Walking the course reveals a rhythm between demanding shots and rewarding vistas, making every round feel both invigorating and memorable. The layout accommodates those seeking competitive golf as well as casual play in one of California’s captivating mountain environments.
For those traveling to Northern California’s Sierra region, Gray’s Crossing presents an exceptional mountain golf experience that marries thoughtful design with genuine natural beauty. Its combination of strategic routing, scenic elevation, and solid course conditioning cultivates rounds that engage both the mind and senses.
Course Highlights
Gray's Crossing showcases strategic use of elevation with holes that thread through pine forests and along mountainous ridges. The course’s signature holes highlight dramatic elevation changes and risk-reward choices, particularly the par-5 5th and par-4 15th, which challenge players to weigh aggression against precision. Well-maintained greens offer subtle undulations, while natural mountain elements shape the layout’s character.

I played both Old Greenwood and Gray’s Crossing on 7/4 and 7/5. Both courses are tournament grade courses. Courses are in great shape tees to greens. Personally, I like Gray’s Crossing better because of the layout and the view. Staffs are very friendly. Had a wonderful time.

The pacer play was excellent. The greens were in great shape so were the fairways. The rough is tough, but that’s what you get for not hitting the short errors.

All around amazing course. Staff are great, cart service was wonderful, and the views and setting of the course are tremendous. Of the two sister courses, Old Greenwood definitely takes the cake but Grays crossing is tremendous as well and always gets my recommendation. Some very getable holes, depending on your distance and tee you can maybe drive a couple of the Par4s. Greens were flying this day but was faster than normal, and not always the case. Very fun course, wonderfully kept, recommend to anyone.

Gray's needs water at the range or first tee for drinking. Also brushes at the club cleaning station. AND good sunscreen available at the range. Old Greenwood has all that, why not Gray's?

Honestly, the course is great but this is for their events F&B team. I had a golf event their two years ago and had my vendors sign the CC authorization forms. Apparently they didn't go through and the course is now shaking me down for the money. HIGHLY recommend not doing events there, it was a mess.
