Hideaway Hills Golf Club

Kunkletown, Pennsylvania, USAPocono Mountains

Hideaway Hills Golf Club challenges players with its intense elevation changes and narrow mountain fairways. This 18-hole public course in Pennsylvania offers a rugged, strategy-driven round best suited for golfers who enjoy testing their skills against nature’s toughest contours.

Course Overview

Set amid the rugged terrain of Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains, Hideaway Hills Golf Club presents an 18-hole public course that demands thoughtful strategy and precision. This mountain-style layout commands respect with its dramatic elevation changes, narrow fairways framed by dense woods, and striking vantage points that reward long, accurate shots. The course’s natural contours create compelling challenges, where uphill drives test power and downhill holes tease players with the possibility of record-setting distance.

Hideaway Hills offers an experience that leans toward the demanding, making it best suited for intermediate to advanced golfers. Tee boxes perched above the landscape afford sweeping views across valleys and distant peaks, yet bring blind shots that require careful course knowledge or guidance. The greens run true and, generally, smooth, inviting well-placed approach shots and delicate touch around the pin.

Players will note the course’s distinctive features, such as multiple tee options on key holes and several forced carries over water hazards that amplify both excitement and difficulty. The bunkers, though not numerous, are strategically placed to protect scoring opportunities without overwhelming the fairways. While certain holes border residential areas, the natural mountain setting dominates, providing a sense of isolation and immersion in the surroundings.

Maintenance at Hideaway Hills has seen improvement in recent years, with the greens and fairways receiving regular care. Some tee boxes and rough areas show signs of wear, reflecting the course’s exposure to seasonal shifts and the challenges of high elevation turf management. Amenities remain modest, reflecting the club's public and approachable nature, with a simple clubhouse and friendly staff who contribute to the welcoming atmosphere.

Walkers should prepare for the considerable elevation changes and uneven footing, with cart paths following the rugged terrain closely. Carrying your own bunker rake is necessary, as rakes are not stationed at bunkers. Consider late spring through early autumn for your visit, as winter conditions limit playability. Despite its toughness, Hideaway Hills rewards golfers who approach it with patience and respect, offering a mountain golf experience that stands out in Pennsylvania’s diverse landscape.

Course Highlights

Distinctive elevation shifts provide panoramic views and strategic challenges, including multiple holes requiring long carries over water hazards. The course is known for its demanding uphill and downhill lies and a rugged landscape that rewards thoughtful shot placement. Despite pockets of residential bordering some holes, the natural mountain setting dominates. The lack of rakes at bunkers and limited signage demands heightened awareness.

This is a mixed review. The golf course is OK. Severe elevation changes and a lot of blind shots make it challenging. The greens were good, fairways were OK, as were most tee boxes but the rough was burned out and cut way too short. Accommodations were rustic...at best, and could have used MORE than a little TLC. The lady bartenders in the clubhouse were fantastic. Overall, interesting course if you play the proper tees, but wouldn't necessary stay there again.

This is an update, the maintenance crew on this course could not have had a tougher year, they kept this place in wonderful condition considering the weather. I also want to mention the starter Dan we had this as he runs a really tight ship and keeps things moving. He is a very friendly person. I really don't want to share this but I will, the secrets out, this is the best public golf course in all of Pennsylvania. Unbelievable views and elevation changes. A huge challenge but fair. Hit the ball well and you will be rewarded. Takes about 4 1/2 to play because it is hard and must be thought out. If you don't play well expect to shoot very high scores. Consistently in good condition. Not for the novice golfer. We have played over 400 courses and this one is number one! Go tommorow! Note: This course can not be walked unless you are a Billy goat.

Hideaway Hills Golf Course is an excellent golf course. It’s one of the best I’ve played. The greens and fairways were in terrific shape. The elevated tee boxes that look down on course are a great addition. The view was beautiful. The service was professional and exceptional. I definitely recommend this course. I’ll be playing there again.

This was my first time playing this course, and with just a few adjustments, it could easily be a 5-star experience. The staff was friendly and welcoming. While I didn’t bring any alcohol, it seems to be accepted here as no one inspected my cooler or asked about it. The course itself is both beautiful and challenging. It’s unique in that some holes feature two sets of white tees, which I haven't encountered on other courses. If you struggle to keep your drives straight, be prepared to bring extra balls, as many of the holes are lined with woods and involve steep uphill or downhill shots. There are also at least four holes where you need to drive over large ponds, adding to the challenge. On the downhill holes, I hit some of the longest drives of my life, but the uphill holes were a different story. The fairways and bunkers were all in great shape. Most holes had ball washers, but some didn’t have water or were broken, which was a minor inconvenience. Due to the hilly terrain, many holes are cart path only, and the paths can be fairly distant from the far edges of the greens or fairways. Another unusual feature is that you have to carry a bunker rake with you, which can be a hassle. If you find your ball in the bunker and forgot to bring the rake, it’s a long walk back to your cart. This can slow down the pace of play and feel disruptive. Speaking of pace, according to the sign in the cart, the expected pace of play is 4 1/2 hours. I played solo and it took me over 5 hours due to waiting on the groups ahead of me, which the starter had warned me about. While I don’t mind a leisurely pace, it’s not ideal when you feel like you are constantly being watched by the group behind you. In one instance, someone asked to play through, which I was willing to do. I pointed out that I wasn’t the one causing the holdup and the person elected to stay behind me. A few holes are set within a housing development, with houses lining both sides of the fairway. On hole 5, the house next to it has an honor system bucket where they sell golf balls for three for a dollar. haha. The scorecard lacked a map, and I found myself lost around hole 16 due to the lack of signage (there was no sign for hole 16), just a ball washer. On hole 17, if you’re playing later in the day, be prepared to hit directly into the setting sun, which can be blinding. I attached a photo, though it doesn’t quite capture how challenging that sun angle is. A bit of extra attention to the ball washers and improved signage would enhance the experience. Also, having rakes at the bunkers would be a better alternative to carrying them around. Despite these minor issues, it’s a unique and enjoyable course overall.

This is a spectacular scenic mountain golf course. The views are awesome. With panoramic views on the mountains and valley. This is definitely a course you need to play and want to play multiple times to get to know where to position your ball for the next shot. I was told there were 3 signature holes but I believe there are several that could qualify. I rated this course with 4 stars as the tee boxes need work and crab grass has taken over the tee boxes and a fair amount of the rough.
