Heron Lakes Golf Course

Portland, Oregon, USAPacific Northwest

Heron Lakes Golf Course in Portland combines parkland and links-style play across two 18-hole courses. With mature trees, water hazards, and shifting winds, it offers an accessible yet strategic challenge for all skill levels within a vibrant urban setting.

Course Overview

Located just north of downtown Portland, Heron Lakes Golf Course offers a compelling two-course layout that appeals to a broad spectrum of golfers. This public facility features 36 holes split between the Greenback and Blue courses. Both courses reflect contrasting flavors with natural elements shaping the playing experience. The Greenback course leans toward a parkland style, weaving through mature trees and strategically placed bunkers that guard the fairways and greens. It offers an inviting challenge, suitable for intermediates and those seeking a serene test of shot-making. On the other hand, the Blue course presents a firmer, links-style vibe, with wind playing a key role in strategy. Its wide-open spaces encourage aggressive play but punish errant shots with water hazards and sand traps that demand precision and patience from low handicappers.

Heron Lakes’ setting embraces the Pacific Northwest’s varied terrain, featuring a rich mix of firs, maples, and towering evergreens. This variety crafts distinct moods from hole to hole, shifting from shaded, wooded stretches to exposed, breezier fairways where controlling the ball is paramount. The courses are generally well-maintained, with greens that hold true, though early morning dew and occasional soggy patches can influence play, especially in wet seasons.

With a target audience ranging from casual weekend players to aspiring competitors, the course remains gratifying without feeling overwhelming. Its mix of hole lengths and hazard placements invites gamers to adapt and refine their approaches while remaining accessible to mid- and high-handicap players. Amenities include a fully equipped clubhouse offering rental clubs and a pro shop stocked with essentials. The practice area allows for warm-ups before teeing off, rounding out the convenience for visitors.

Walkers will appreciate mostly gentle elevation changes and well-defined cart paths, while scenic views of Portland’s urban skyline peek through breaks in the canopy. Whether swinging through peaceful woodland corridors or tackling gust-swept links challenges, Heron Lakes embodies adaptable golf within the city limits. Plan for varying Pacific Northwest weather, and pack for both cool, damp mornings and the potential for afternoon sun. This approachable yet test-rich venue remains a favorite among Portland golfers looking to sharpen their skills without leaving the metro area.

Course Highlights

The Greenback course offers protected greens with bunker-lined fairways framed by native evergreens, while the Blue course challenges players with wind-exposed fairways and strategically placed water hazards. Both courses showcase Portland’s distinctive mix of forest and open terrain, providing dynamic shot-making opportunities and visual variety. The juxtaposition of courses allows golfers to experience both a classic parkland and a more open, links-influenced style within one visit.

My husband was looking forward to playing somewhere new and I was looking forward to getting out to enjoy the sun while fulfilling my passenger princess duties. The course is gorgeous and well maintained, and the scenery was amazing. The amount of rules on the course and the rude staff made it real hard for us to enjoy the day. We got charged extra for me to sit in the golf cart, which wasn’t disclosed when booking the tee time. We won’t be back, which is sad because we really enjoyed the scenery.

Played Greenback and found it pretty challenging. Water hazards on many of the holes and a lot of greens surrounded by bunkers. If you play during sunrise bring extra balls as I had a hell of a time finding mine due to plugged lies in fairway and rough.

Booked online and then was told by the man with little teeth that my husband and I couldn’t have our 4 year old son with us to golf because it was a “Portland golf rule”, meanwhile we’ve been to most country clubs and clubs In Oregon and ZERO people have said anything to us for years. It seems weird to me that Herron lakes is all about “first tee” but won’t let anything younger than 8years old out there to golf. I’m all for “ rules” but these rules are exactly what makes Portland TRASH and doesn’t grow the game.

Love this course. Always a joy with staff and players. Lost a star because they charge for your wife to come along as a ride along. Wild. But here's a beautiful photo I captured. Posted edited.

My favorite city course in Portland. Greenback is super friendly, especially if you have a propensity to hit a fade off the tee box. Great blue will kick your ass, but it’s a fun links style course.

Great public course. Muddy this time of year but to be expected. Such a variety of trees on the course make it attractive. Watch out for bunkers on the doglegs!
