Erie Golf Club

Erie, Pennsylvania, USANorthwest Pennsylvania

Erie Golf Club offers an 18-hole mountain-style layout rich in strategic design by A.W. Tillinghast. Stretching just over 6,200 yards, this members-only course challenges golfers with elevation shifts and precisely contoured greens framed by natural terrain.

Course Overview

Erie Golf Club presents an authentic experience steeped in golf history and characterized by its A.W. Tillinghast design pedigree. This 18-hole championship course, located just outside downtown Erie, Pennsylvania, offers a traditional mountain layout that challenges strategy and shot-making. The course stretches approximately 6,250 yards from the back tees with a par of 71, inviting players to navigate its thoughtful mix of doglegs, elevation changes, and well-contoured greens.

The landscape commands attention through its natural terrain, with rolling hills and mature tree lines framing fairways that test both accuracy and club selection. While not excessively long by modern standards, the course’s design demands precision; thoughtful positioning off the tee and an understanding of the greens’ subtle breaks become crucial for scoring well. Players of all skill levels can find enjoyment here, though low-handicap golfers will appreciate the course’s strategic nuances and risk-reward moments.

Facilities include a welcoming clubhouse that accommodates members and guests, with amenities that support both casual rounds and competitive play. The course remains a members-only venue with access by invitation or referral, preserving an intimate atmosphere for those fortunate enough to play it.

One of the defining features of Erie Golf Club is its commitment to preserving the original architecture while adapting to the natural mountain terrain. Bunkers are placed to safeguard key angles on approach shots, requiring thoughtful planning. Greens roll true and demand careful reading, rewarding attentive golfers with rewarding putting challenges.

Walkers will find the course manageable, though comfortable golf shoes are advised due to the undulating fairways and occasional steep inclines. The surrounding region offers a stark contrast of wooded areas and open vistas, providing a sensory connection to the environment throughout the round.

With a rich history dating back to 1928 and a design heritage linked to one of golf’s great architects, Erie Golf Club presents an opportunity to engage with classic golf architecture in a scenic mountain setting. Though some recent player reviews point to maintenance inconsistencies, the course remains a captivating option for those who appreciate strategic golf and the challenge of a course shaped by terrain rather than sheer length.

Course Highlights

This Golden Age golf course was a treat to play. The course is designed by A W Tillinghast who also designed courses at Medina, Bethpage Black, Winged Foot, and Baltasrul as well as many other highly ranked courses. The layout of the course was a magnificent mix of long and short holes, left and right dog legs and risk reward holes. The course is not long at 6250 from the tips, but keep in mind when it was built in 1928 there were no such things as 460cc drivers or Pro V1 golf balls. The greens rolled very well and had some contours to make you think. Only 1 hole had a green that was rough and beat up on edges. The fall colors added even more beauty and tranquility to the round. While fall leaves always make finding even a shot in the fairway a challenge, the couple of mtce folks I saw were working diligently to blow them out of play. All the folks I encountered at the course were very friendly and helpful. This course was recently purchased and the new owner plans to close the course all of 2025 to restore it to its original design per an article I read. Not sure what that entails, but the only thing I would change is perhaps taking out a few trees here and there. This is a great course today, don’t change it too much. Get out and play this course in 2024 while you can.

This used to be such a beautiful course but it is now completely not maintained. I actually thought it was abandoned when I drove past the lower holes. $30 to play 9 holes on a non maintained course where their variety comes from just having 3 different holes on each green. A shame!

Horrible experience! My friends and I were golfing earlier today at Erie Golf Course for around 2 hours and 30 minutes. Near the end of our session, we were approached by an older man, which we later found out is the owner of the course. Now mind you we wernt doing anything wrong nor misbehaving. The owner approached us to complain very aggressively that we were taking very long with our 9 holes. Personally 2 and a half hours isn’t a very long time for 9 holes especially for newer players. We were not holding anyone up either and the when we thought we were, we let them play through us. The owner of the Golf Course was harassing us and following us every hole we went to complaining about how we played. He rudely told us to play faster and that we had to be goofing off because there’s no way we could be taking that low. I then nicely explained to the man that we were newer players and that we realistically were not taking that long. He wouldn’t stop following us even after we asked him that to stop following us, and as we tried to reason with him. We were treated terribly by the owner. Him harassing me and my friends has made me never want to attend the course again. We paid $20 to play on a unmaintained course and be treated like bad children. The course is not well maintained and is overgrown and has random holes everywhere. Me and my friends were very respectful to the man while he treated us with hostility. In the end the man yelled at us for quite literally just playing golf. The owner of the golf course harassed me and my friends and treated us the worst i’ve ever been treated. Personally I would recommend for anyone thinking about golfing here to go somewhere else. There is no golf course that should treat their customers how we got treated.

Over priced. Golf course was not well maintained and had a cluster of different holes you had to play. Not worth my money nor time. $27 for nine holes is ridiculous. Might as well go to JC Martin where I’d have a better experience.
