Stowe Country Club

Stowe, Vermont, USANorthern Vermont

Stowe Country Club is a members-only, 18-hole course blending rolling parkland terrain with the natural elevations of Vermont’s Green Mountains. Its strategic layout and fast greens offer a rewarding challenge amid a relaxed New England atmosphere.

Course Overview

Stowe Country Club offers an 18-hole championship layout set against the rugged, verdant backdrop of Vermont’s Green Mountains. This members-only course combines classic parkland features with the natural hilly terrain that defines the region, presenting golfers with rolling fairways, carefully placed bunkers, and fast, undulating greens that demand strategic shot-making and thoughtful approach play. The evolving elevation challenges golfers to master both distance control and club selection, especially when the winds pick up, testing tempo and precision.

The course is designed to engage players across skill levels, yet its true character unfolds through its subtle complexity. While the overall length of approximately 6,255 yards offers a moderate test, the topography and well-situated hazards elevate the difficulty beyond what one might expect on paper. Members and guests appreciate the course’s ability to reward thoughtful play rather than sheer power, inviting a measured strategy amid Vermont’s crisp mountain air.

Beyond the fairways, Stowe Country Club boasts a welcoming clubhouse that anchors the experience with classic New England charm. Its food and beverage offerings, notably Kirkwood’s Pub, provide a relaxed atmosphere to decompress after a round, where hearty portions and attentive service complement the day’s exertions. The practice facilities feature a quality grass range and ample putting surfaces, although the greens on the course present a much livelier challenge, emphasizing uphill breaks and subtle contours absent in the practice area.

Walking the course is encouraged, with clearly marked cart paths guiding play to protect turf and maintain pace. The gently shifting hills invite players to feel the landscape beneath their feet, though sturdy footwear is recommended to navigate softer or uneven sections. Seasonal rain can leave certain low points soft, but the maintenance team’s diligent work ensures the course remains playable and appealing throughout the golfing season.

Stowe Country Club’s serene setting, combined with its well-maintained conditions and thoughtful design, offer a compelling experience for golfers seeking a course that balances scenic variety with genuine strategic depth. This is a place where natural elements shape the challenge, rewarding focus and patience on every hole.

Course Highlights

The course’s elevated and rolling topography commands strategic golf, especially on fast, undulating greens and holes shaped by Vermont’s natural hills. Kirkwood’s Pub in the clubhouse provides a friendly, welcoming environment post-round. The layout balances length and shot-making, with several blind tee shots and hazards that emphasize course management.

All I can say is wow! Only the back 9 are open, but what a great 9 holes! Beautiful course! We stopped in Kirkwood’s Pub for a beverage and food, and again wow! The food was fresh, big portions and super friendly staff!

well kept course - staff is friendly too to out of towners like myself. The fairways are so bumpy, only pet peeve. Also it gets dusty if you are behind another golf cart on some paths. Other than that, it’s a challenging course, and from the Vermont rough grass, ouch! August 2021 played, course and weather were fantastic.

Fantastic course and well maintained. Not the most difficult course but great location with beautiful views. HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Staff was great, excellent grass range and practice area(s). Putting green adjacent to the first tee is nothing like the greens you’ll find on the course. It is flat and slow compared to what’s out there. Course has a great layout, is in excellent condition and the times are spaced well enough apart where the pace of play was great. The low spots were soft but that’s to be expected with the hilly terrain and all the rain VT has seen. The signage telling where you to take the carts and where not to was spot on. Here’s my one “complaint”. The slope and rating for this course is NOWHERE near what it should be. I’m a 5.5 handicap and played the back tees which is 6255 yards on the scorecard with a rating / slope of 69.6 / 119. My course handicap rated to a 3 which is crazy low. Something around 71 / 128 would be much more appropriate. 119 is comical, not even close. Now the course isn’t the most penal or long but the hilly terrain, fast / undulating greens, a few blind shots and multiple OB / penalty areas definitely make it play much tougher than indicated. If you’re an average golfer and see the white tees with a slope / rating of 67.6 / 115, don’t be fooled. You will have a very tough time.

Course was in okay condition, could only play 9 of 18 holes due to construction. I was fully aware of price prior to playing, but there’s no reason with rentals 9 holes should cost $150 for what you get. I was fine with the price until playing the course. Carts have no screens, no marking on course whatsoever, bunkers have 4” rocks under the sand, half of the bunkers were torn up and had rock piles in them. Some bunkers were also completely full of water making them unplayable as well. There has been a lot of rain recently, but proper drainage would alleviate ponding to occur. Finally, there were mowers all over the course in the middle of the round. They would drive through fairways as were teeing off and ruined the flow of play. That should be taken care of at 6-7am not 10am. The public courses i play weekly cost $60 for 18 w/o rentals and are in better condition. Also workers are surprised they are losing members when an initiation fee is $15,000. You can’t charge that much and not have the basics dialed in on the course (screen on cart, groomed bunkers without boulders, signage, beverage cart??).

This is a challenging golf course. The tree boxes and greens were well kept and rolling nice. Fairways and holes were in good shape. I'd play there again.
