Silver Oak Golf Course

Carson City, Nevada, USANorthern Nevada

Silver Oak Golf Course in Carson City blends straightforward playability with subtle elevation changes across 18 holes. Featuring a vintage-themed clubhouse and well-maintained fairways, this public course welcomes golfers seeking a balanced challenge amid desert-influenced terrain.

Course Overview

Silver Oak Golf Course offers an engaging test of golf amid the varied terrain of Carson City, Nevada. This 18-hole public course presents a blend of flat and elevated holes that challenge players with shifting elevation changes and well-maintained fairways. The front nine plays out predominantly on flatter ground, inviting a focus on precision and course management, while the back nine climbs, demanding calculated club selection and rewarding those who can negotiate uphill approaches with confidence.

The layout unfolds within a semi-arid environment where native vegetation creates natural boundaries, and desert winds subtly influence play, especially on the higher holes. Fairways are broad but guarded by strategically placed bunkers and natural hazards that make errant shots costly. Greens are generally fast and receptive, offering a steady pace that encourages aggressive putting but requires careful reading to master.

Silver Oak’s clubhouse offers a distinctive character with its vintage automotive theme, incorporating historic gas station memorabilia and a 1950s diner ambiance that adds a lively social dimension after rounds. Practice facilities, including a driving range, putting greens, and a dedicated practice bunker, provide ample opportunity for players to refine all aspects of their game.

The course is suited to a wide spectrum of golfers, from beginners seeking an enjoyable and walkable experience to intermediate and low handicap players looking to test their skills on varied terrain. Walking is encouraged, though shoe choice is important given some firmer, desert-style soils and occasional slope. Golf cart paths are well maintained, ensuring a smooth ride for those who prefer motorized assistance.

While improvements and maintenance projects are occasionally underway, Silver Oak maintains course conditions that reflect a commitment to quality. Service staff receive consistent praise for their professionalism and friendly approach, enhancing the overall experience.

For those planning a visit, midweek tee times typically offer the most relaxed pace and favorable weather. The combination of scenic views, practical layout, and approachable difficulty makes Silver Oak Golf Course a memorable stop for anyone exploring golf in the Carson City area.

Course Highlights

The course’s distinct character derives from its contrasting front and back nines, blending flat fairway precision with uphill strategic challenges. The vintage car-themed clubhouse creates a unique social hub, while the practice bunker and driving range support comprehensive preparation. Elevated holes expose golfers to light desert winds that influence shot-making, adding to the tactical complexity. Bunkers are thoughtfully placed to protect key landing zones and test approach accuracy throughout the round.

Absolute garbage. Played this course many times in the past. Was usually good. Website says $65 for 18 after 10am. We were charged $71.75 at 11:33. One in our foursome could only play 9 and asked for some kind of discount. Absolutely not the “gentleman” behind the counter said. Course is in shitty shape. Construction all over the back nine. Tee boxes dead or swampy. Cart path detours everywhere. The greens were nice but that’s it. Will not be back… ever

My wife and I played a very nice 18 yesterday. The course is in great shape. The staff members were all super friendly and professional. The course has some interesting and unique holes. One hole on the back nine is temporarily shortened from a par-4 to a par-3 due to construction. I had no problem with this -- it is nice to see a course that is making the investment to improve the player experience. Highly recommended.

Today, I received clear permission from the clubhouse to hop on from my house and play the back nine at Silver Oak. I was walking the course alone, playing respectfully and at a steady pace. Immediately after I began, a group of elderly men behind me started hitting into me — and it kept happening. The first incident happened while I was in the rough taking practice swings. A ball landed just five yards away from me. I was caught off guard — confused about who these men were and why they were hitting toward me while I was clearly still playing the hole. I let it go and continued. But after I finished the hole and was walking off the green, it escalated. One of their shots flew about 10 yards over my head — a dangerously close call. At that point, I turned around and told them to stop hitting into me. Instead of apologizing, they drove up to me and immediately got aggressive. They cursed at me and accused me of cutting in front of them. I calmly explained that I was walking the course and had permission to start on the back nine. One of them looked straight at me and said: “We don’t even care — just get out of the way when we hit.” That moment ended my round. I walked home — not because I wanted to, but because I no longer felt safe. I refused to escalate the conflict, but staying would’ve meant accepting that kind of reckless and hostile behavior, and I couldn’t do that. This wasn’t a misunderstanding. It was deliberate, aggressive, and unsafe. Golf is supposed to be a game of patience, respect, and integrity. Today, I saw none of that. I was hit into repeatedly, spoken to with open hostility, and forced to leave a round I had looked forward to. No golfer — walking or riding, young or old — should ever be made to feel like an obstacle in someone else's rush. Safety is not negotiable. Respect is not optional. And no round of golf is worth putting someone else in danger. I truly hope the kind of behavior I experienced is the exception — and that we can all do better to protect the dignity of the game and the well-being of those who love it. I also hope the course takes this seriously and finds ways to help prevent situations like this in the future.

Loved this course. Tucked up at the northern end of Carson City, quite the gem. Front nine and back nine play completely different. Front is flat layout. Back is a climb up. Will defines play here again when visiting. Oh and I forgot to mention, the club house and driving range is automobile themed. Old gas station relics, old cars, and a 50's inspired diner look in the club house. Will probably ho there just for lunch, looks fun.
