Crooked Tree Golf Club

Petoskey, Michigan, USANorthern Michigan

Crooked Tree Golf Club delivers a compelling 18-hole challenge framed by gentle elevation changes and glimpses of Michigan’s lakes. Well-maintained greens and strategic doglegs create a rewarding round for a wide range of golfers looking to test their shot-making in a relaxed yet focused setting.

Course Overview

Crooked Tree Golf Club offers an 18-hole championship layout that balances challenge and charm on Michigan’s northern shores. Set in Petoskey, this public course invites golfers of varying skill levels to navigate a course that rewards thoughtful strategy and precise execution. The design presents a subtle mix of elevation changes and dogleg holes, crafting a playing experience that engages both novices and seasoned players.

The front nine sets a steady pace with a distinctive 90-degree dogleg early on, testing course management skills from the outset. Its fairways are well-maintained, though confronted by well-placed bunkers and strategic hazards that demand accuracy. The back nine opens to reveal broader vistas and the quiet presence of nearby lakes, adding both aesthetical appeal and the subtle challenge of wind that can influence shot selection and tempo.

Greens on Crooked Tree are known for their consistency and realistic contours, encouraging a range of putts from delicate tap-ins to breaking tests of touch. These surfaces reward players who judge pace and line carefully, bringing a satisfying sense of accomplishment with every successful read.

Amenities complement the course’s natural setting, with a spacious clubhouse that serves as a welcoming hub for players before and after rounds. Golf carts equipped with GPS enhance navigation around the course, though walking remains a viable and enjoyable option for those wishing to engage more deeply with the surroundings. Players should bring appropriate footwear for modest elevation shifts and occasional soft turf, especially after rain.

While water stations are limited on course, refreshments are available in the clubhouse, making it wise to plan accordingly on warmer days. Crooked Tree’s layout and upkeep appeal to golfers seeking a high-quality round amid northern Michigan’s evolving seasonal backdrop. Its blend of strategic holes, changing elevation, and scenic water views crafts an experience that entertains without overwhelming, marking it as a valuable stop for travelers exploring the Petoskey area.

Course Highlights

The course features a strategic 90-degree dogleg early on that shapes the front nine's rhythm. Several holes near water offer both scenic views and subtle wind challenges. The back nine unfolds with elevation shifts and broader fairways, culminating in holes that frame peaceful lake scenes. Well-kept greens and fairways support shot precision with a fair margin for error, making playability balanced with demanding design elements.

This was perhaps one of the best kept secrets in all of national golf reporting. Crooked tree golf course combines everything you like about good golf courses. Really good greens really good fairways manageable, rough nice difficulty great opportunity…

Such a beautiful course. The last 4 holes you get a glimpse of the Lake. Hole 16 is incredible. A very fun, challenging course with immaculate fairways and greens. Very comfortable golf cart and we loved the technology inside! We played the twilight round which was worth every penny. Really appreciate the staff letting us out early to play as a two-some instead of being paired with another cart (like we were scheduled to). Overall, fantastic experience and would love to play again!

Final course on our July Michigan golf trip. Couldn't have picked a better finishing course. Course in excellent shape. Greens rolled great. Nice elevation changes and several challenging doglegs. Really enjoyed this course. Do not overlook it. Highly recommend

Crooked Tree is a decent layout. I'm not sure what the day rate is as it was part of our package. The range was in poor shape at 1pm on a Sunday. The course was in good shape. It's unnecessarily tricky with a 90 degree dog leg to start your round. Not exactly the best way to encourage a brisk pace of play with trouble right, left, and long. My smallest complaint is with the lack of drinking water on the course. Bottled water is available for the low, low price of $5 for 20oz bottle. This was on a 95 degree day. My biggest complaint is with the cart GPS system. For the second year in a row, merely pulling to the side of the cart path on 15 set of an obnoxious, consistent beeping sound for about a minute. Mind you, I hadn't been in the tall grass, or parked in a bunker, just two wheels off the path to let another cart past. See the little video. Pretty views of the lake on a couple holes if that strikes your fancy.

I only played the back nine. The women’s tees were well placed, making it a very enjoyable course.
