Course Overview
Sandpoint Elks Golf Course in Ponderay, Idaho, offers a compact yet engaging 9-hole layout that appeals primarily to golfers seeking a casual and approachable experience amid northern Idaho’s relaxed atmosphere. This public course balances accessibility with enough strategic elements to hold the attention of both beginners and more experienced players. Set against a backdrop of rolling terrain punctuated by mature trees and well-maintained fairways, the course utilizes its limited footprint efficiently to deliver variety through two distinct sets of tee boxes, enabling a different challenge on the front and back nines.
Playing Sandpoint Elks means encountering greens that reward thoughtful shot placement. The putting surfaces tend to be firm with subtle undulations; many golfers find that shots landing short of the pins have the best chance of running close, as aggressive attempts at holding the flag can backfire. Accuracy off the tee plays a role, given the presence of tightly spaced fairways flanked by out-of-bounds boundaries, especially for those susceptible to slicing or hooking.
For local players, the course represents a friendly weekly challenge, with its walkability a draw despite occasional critiques of maintenance levels. Golfers are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes, as some sections can feel uneven underfoot. The absence of a driving range means pre-round warm-ups might require a visit to a nearby facility. On-site amenities include a casual clubhouse offering food praised by visitors for quality and value—highlighted by the popular turkey pesto ciabatta and homemade real onion rings, making post-round meals a local favorite.
While Sandpoint Elks is not designed to be austere championship terrain, its inviting layout and welcoming staff shape it into a course that rewards a relaxed pace and a focus on enjoyable golf rather than relentless scoring. Visitors planning a trip to northern Idaho will find it convenient for a quick round, ideal for those who appreciate a straightforward course with enough quirks to keep play interesting without the pressures of a tournament-grade test.
Course Highlights
The course stands out with its dual tee boxes providing alternate routing challenges on each nine, complemented by tight fairways bordered by out-of-bounds zones that test directional control. Greens require careful approach shots and reward well-measured putts. The friendly clubhouse serves as a social hub, praised for its homemade onion rings and generous sandwiches, adding a unique local flavor to the overall round.

WOW! The food was fantastic! My wife had the turkey pesto cabatta sandwich.... Yum! I had the chicken fried steak burger.. Sounds a bit odd, but it was great! Oh and the homemade real onion rings! Were excellent. We are out of state golfers just passing through, usually have good history and local golf courses with food... Yep the Elks food was great!

I will say I have played this course at least once a week for the past 5 weeks. It is in really good condition. The staff is great. The greens are a bit challenging as you have to land short of the flag and run to the flag going long, or flying at the flag is not a great option here, even with spin. For a 9 hole course it is set up nicely with 2 different tee boxes for the front and back, so it presents different challenges. There are some holes that are very tight where out of bounds is concerned especially if you slice or hook depending on if you are a righty or lefty. The cost even walking is a little steep for what the course is, & it is why I am giving it a 4 instead of a 5.

A decent little course. Reasonably priced if you're walking. But it's a little ridiculous that the cart fee on eighteen holes costs the same as the entire round ($37). Definitely not worth almost $80. Not particularly challenging, but fun enough. Staff were friendly. I don't think I'll return, but I don't regret going.

Do not bother playing here. Truly. The grounds are in such poor condition that it felt like we were on a 4x4 adventure over the course of 9 holes. Our tee time was supposed to be 7 am. At 7:15 we had to hunt someone down to get us checked in. The man checking us in then proceeded to tell us a litany of stupid jokes. There is also no driving range. Go up to Mirror Lake golf course instead. It is a well maintained and beautiful course with excellent customer service!
