Longmont, Colorado, USANorthern Colorado

City of Longmont Sunset Golf Course is a historic 9-hole municipal layout known for its tight, tree-lined fairways and challenging small greens. Offering a blend of strategic challenges and approachable play, this compact course delivers a unique golf experience amid Longmont’s urban landscape.

Course Overview

Stepping onto the City of Longmont Sunset Golf Course is like entering a piece of living history in the heart of Longmont, Colorado. This 9-hole municipal course stretches across just over 2,900 yards with a par of 35, offering a compact yet thoughtfully challenging layout. Distinguished by its century-old roots, Sunset's charm lies in its mature, towering trees that line narrow fairways, creating corridor-like shots that demand accuracy off the tee. The course’s subtle elevation changes add variety and test your club selection over each hole. Though the course lacks water hazards, the strategic placement of sand traps and the tight fairways keep players mindful of every stroke.

Sunset’s greens are small and undulating, requiring a delicate touch and well-planned approach shots. Players who strike the ball cleanly will find it fairly forgiving, but slight mis-hits invite trouble as rough and trees quickly come into play. The setting combines the quiet atmosphere of a neighborhood park with a competitive design, making it approachable for golfers working to improve while still rewarding those with more refined skills.

For those planning a round, walking is encouraged to appreciate the course’s intimate scale and ambiance, though the compact yardage also allows for quicker rounds than traditional 18-hole tracks. The clubhouse staff are noted to be welcoming, further enhancing the experience. Because the course is popular with local beginners, pace of play can vary, so early weekday tee times are recommended for those seeking a smoother flow.

Sunset Golf Course offers a rare glimpse into golf’s early days wrapped in an urban setting. Whether you are a Longmont local or passing through, this course is a practical and enjoyable test of golf that balances historic character with playable fun. Be ready for challenging tree-lined holes, well-placed bunkers, and small greens that reward precision over power. It’s a distinctive Colorado golfing experience that invites players to embrace its unique blend of tradition and challenge.

Course Highlights

The course’s historic nature is highlighted by its mature trees and tight fairways that have remained largely unchanged for over 100 years. Elevation changes provide subtle test of distance control, while the small, tricky greens underpin the strategic demands. Despite its short length, the layout challenges with well-placed sand traps and narrow landing areas, setting it apart from typical municipal courses.

A nice 100+ year old municipal 9 hole course. There are no water hazards, but there are plenty of challenges with elevation change, very well established trees, and sneaky sand traps.

Review from a moderate golfer perspective. The course itself offered a nice balance of challenge without being overly difficult. While being slightly on the difficult side, I think its a great option for both seasoned golfers and those still learning the ropes. Only being a nine hole course could turn off some people but it was fine for me in November. Despite the winter weather we had just received, the course was in surprisingly good condition in November. The staff at the clubhouse were friendly and welcoming, adding to the overall positive vibe of the place. I enjoyed my time there and would recommend it to fellow golf enthusiasts.

Nice course. But more challenging than you think bc of tree lined fairways and houses, missing slightly right here will get you in trouble quickly. I’ve played here twice and have got paired with beginners, so the play has been slow, 2.5 hours+ for nine . Not great

Having a fantastic, 100+ year old course like Sunset in the middle of Longmont is truly special. The massive, mature trees, the tight fairways, the small, tricky greens all combine to make it fun and challenging. It can feel easy if you’re striking it well, but your score can go up quickly if you aren’t. It’s currently in excellent condition, especially the greens, which are smooth and fast. Because it is affordable and relatively short, it can draw beginners and higher handicappers so be aware of stray shots. Also, because it’s not easy, as some assume, pace of play can be slow, as less skilled golfers take a long time to get around. But, if you play at the right time, Sunset can be an amazing experience on a historic, unique course.
