City of Longmont Sunset Golf Course

Longmont, Colorado, USANorthern Colorado

A historic nine-hole municipal course in Longmont, Colorado, Sunset Golf Course challenges golfers with tight, tree-lined fairways, subtle elevation changes, and small greens. Its approachable length combined with strategic demands offers an engaging round for players of varying skill levels.

Course Overview

City of Longmont Sunset Golf Course offers a distinct blend of historic charm and practical challenge within its compact nine-hole layout. Situated prominently on Longs Peak Avenue, this public municipal course reflects over a century of golf tradition woven into the urban fabric. Mature trees frame narrow fairways that demand accuracy and strategic shot placement, making it far more than a casual park stroll. Elevation changes subtly test club selection, while small, undulating greens reward precision putting. Without water hazards, the course’s difficulty lies in its natural elements and well-positioned sand traps, encouraging thoughtful navigation on every hole.

While the course’s limited yardage favors approachability, its tight conditions challenge both newcomers seeking to hone their skills and experienced players wanting to sharpen accuracy around the greens. Golfers should anticipate slower rounds during peak times, particularly when paired with higher handicappers, as thoughtful play is essential to enjoying the layout fully. The course thrives when rounds are timed to avoid crowds, allowing golfers to appreciate its quiet, historic atmosphere.

The conditioning varies seasonally, with greens notably smooth and quick in optimal months, offering a stimulating putting surface that complements the course's strategic demands. Tree-lined fairways must be respected; a slight miss right can lead to trouble, reminding players that control outweighs power here. The atmosphere remains welcoming, with friendly clubhouse staff adding to the experience.

Golfers planning a visit should wear comfortable walking shoes to manage the gently rolling terrain and embrace a pace that favors accuracy over speed. Carts are available by request, but walking is often encouraged to enjoy the course’s character. This course suits those eager for an honest round embodying traditional golf values within a community setting. Sunset Golf Course stands as a practical, enjoyable test for golfers seeking history and thoughtful design on a compact, accessible stage.

Having a fantastic, 100+ year old course like Sunset in the middle of Longmont is truly special. The massive, mature trees, the tight fairways, the small, tricky greens all combine to make it fun and challenging. It can feel easy if you’re striking it well, but your score can go up quickly if you aren’t. It’s currently in excellent condition, especially the greens, which are smooth and fast. Because it is affordable and relatively short, it can draw beginners and higher handicappers so be aware of stray shots. Also, because it’s not easy, as some assume, pace of play can be slow, as less skilled golfers take a long time to get around. But, if you play at the right time, Sunset can be an amazing experience on a historic, unique course.

Nice course. But more challenging than you think bc of tree lined fairways and houses, missing slightly right here will get you in trouble quickly. I’ve played here twice and have got paired with beginners, so the play has been slow, 2.5 hours+ for nine . Not great

Review from a moderate golfer perspective. The course itself offered a nice balance of challenge without being overly difficult. While being slightly on the difficult side, I think its a great option for both seasoned golfers and those still learning the ropes. Only being a nine hole course could turn off some people but it was fine for me in November. Despite the winter weather we had just received, the course was in surprisingly good condition in November. The staff at the clubhouse were friendly and welcoming, adding to the overall positive vibe of the place. I enjoyed my time there and would recommend it to fellow golf enthusiasts.

A nice 100+ year old municipal 9 hole course. There are no water hazards, but there are plenty of challenges with elevation change, very well established trees, and sneaky sand traps.
