Coyote Moon Golf Course

Truckee, California, USANorthern California

Coyote Moon Golf Course offers a striking mountain layout with 18 holes framed by forests and elevation changes. Its strategic doglegs and varied terrain challenge golfers of many skill levels while rewarding precision and thoughtful course management.

Course Overview

Coyote Moon Golf Course presents a compelling challenge set amid the rugged mountain landscape of Truckee, California. This 18-hole layout delivers a distinct mountain course experience, featuring dramatic elevation shifts that demand thoughtful shot selection and precise execution. The fairways weave through towering pines and firs, offering a persistent interplay of shaded corridors and wide-open vistas that test both strategy and shot-making.

Players encounter a variety of terrain as they advance, from uphill tee shots that frame distant valleys to downhill approaches that require careful club choice. The undulating fairways tilt subtly left to right, encouraging players to factor slope and wind into every stroke. Bunkers are strategically placed to guard the greens, often sitting below the putting surfaces, adding an element of risk and reward on several key holes.

One of the course’s defining traits is its doglegs, which bend left and right across rolling hills and foothills. The 13th hole, in particular, captures attention with a sweeping downhill tee shot followed by an uphill green that calls for precision on approach. Overall, Coyote Moon blends shot variety with natural beauty, rewarding thoughtful play without alienating mid-level handicappers.

Greens are known for their firm, true roll when conditions allow, with subtle breaks that can surprise and delight those who study their contours. The course’s conditioning generally earns high praise, reflecting an attentive maintenance team focused on preserving the natural mountain environment. Seasonal conditions influence playability, especially early summer when some greens may still recover from harsh winters, so checking course status before a visit is advisable.

Coyote Moon’s vibe is approachable yet refined, making it a sought-after destination for players eager to escape valley heat and experience a refreshing alpine round. Its location near Truckee ensures scenic mountain air and sweeping views that enhance the game. Walking the course is feasible but involves notable elevation shifts; golf carts are available and recommended for many golfers.

In sum, this mountain course delivers an invigorating round blending natural setting with strategic challenge. Players seeking variety in shot-making amid beautiful surroundings will find Coyote Moon a memorable addition to their Northern California golf itinerary.

Great, great course! Newly re-opened so the greens were slow, but rolled well. Amazing elevation changes and doglegs. You have to get the tee shot in the fairway. The course in terrific shape. A must play!

I had been looking forward to playing here for a long time. One of those courses you have to save up for at $195 rack rate ($175 NCGA rate) but was told it was worth it. The layout is 5 stars no doubt. Beautiful tree lined fairways throughout with fun shotmaking value. However, I get to the first hole and the starter says 7 of our greens never recovered from the snow and are unplayable... Is that their fault? Of course not, However, we didn't get an email, there is nothing on the website, and the first time we hear of it is at the first hole. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. Not only did we not get any communication they charged the full rate. As much as I would love to go back and play the course again because it is beautiful, how could I when I wouldn't know if the greens were good due to zero communication? Big bummer.

Course was beautiful and fairways were lush, but greens were sub par. Greens were not cut and pressed and had to really smash the putts to get it to roll.

This is a must play in the Lake Tahoe area. If I was to play one course in the area it would be Coyote Moon. The other more notable course that sits on the “edge of the woods” on Lake Tahoe(not to name names) is half the course for twice the price. Course is cut through the canyons with Incredible views, elevation changes most every hole. Will definitely be back. The 10 round deal for $1000+ is a no brainer.

We enjoyed our first time at Coyote Moon. The weather was perfect and all of the staff were very welcoming. The course was in great shape, lush and not a bad lie was found. The greens were fast and true. Coyote is beautiful and a real joy. Can’t wait to get another crack at it .

Coyote Moon, in general, is in excellent condition, although as of 6/25, a few of the greens are still recovering from winter. To escape the heat of the valley, I will be enjoying many rounds at Coyote this summer. In addition, the staff is friendly and helpful. An excellent golf experience.
