Allen's Golf Course

Redding, California, USANorthern California

Allen’s Golf Course is a charming nine-hole public course in Redding, California. Compact fairways and thoughtfully placed trees create a course that rewards precision and steady play in a relaxed, neighborhood setting.

Course Overview

In the quiet reaches of Redding, California, Allen's Golf Course presents a distinct experience far removed from sprawling resorts or grand championship layouts. This modest nine-hole public course invites golfers to engage with a straightforward, honest game that embraces simplicity without sacrificing challenge. The course stretches across gently undulating terrain framed by mature trees and a serene creek that weaves through several holes, lending a subtle but constant presence to the round. Fairways here are intentionally intimate, demanding precision from tee to green with narrow corridors that reward well-placed iron shots over sheer power.

Playing Allen's is an exercise in focus and rhythm. While the course measures approximately par 33, its design emphasizes shot-making over brute distance, making it a particularly welcoming venue for mid to higher handicaps, yet still providing enough strategy to test more skilled players. The greens tend to run on the slower side, encouraging thoughtful approaches and careful putting. Several holes present gentle doglegs and elevation changes that, paired with the natural serenity of the surrounding neighborhood, foster a pace of play that balances considered strategy with casual enjoyment.

The landscape around Allen's infuses the round with a pleasant sense of place. Nearby homes and quiet streets blend with softly swaying trees and open skies to remind players that golf here exists as part of everyday life. This connection to its environment extends to the course’s upkeep—well-tended, but never over-polished, the fairways and greens maintain their character in every season.

Amenities are limited but efficient, with friendly staff providing attentive service typical of community courses that prioritize hospitality. Walking is encouraged, offering golfers the chance to absorb the calm that exudes from the landscape and heighten their connection with each hole.

For those seeking a golf outing free from pretension, centered on genuine play and quiet reflection, Allen's Golf Course offers a memorable retreat. It stands as a reminder that sometimes, a simple nine can offer all the richness the game demands.

Allen's is a great golf course to get out and have some fun. Nice layout with trees and creek through the place. Fairways are narrow and greens on slow side. Its more an iron course but can drive a few holes depending on your yardage. Think it's a par 33. Anyways great place for some golf.

In a quiet pocket of Redding, where neighborhoods sprawl with quiet resignation and backyards press gently against the edge of the course, there lies Allen’s Golf. It is small. It is modest. And in its stillness, it reminds us of the fleeting nature of all things. The course is not grand, but it endures. Nine holes, drawn with a kind of hesitant affection across sun-worn land. The fairways, uneven and dry in places, seem to sag under the weight of summers long past. And yet, people come. Not in crowds, but in slow-moving pairs, or alone, pushing their carts as if following a thread they cannot name. Here, the game is stripped to its essentials—motion, silence, struggle, and release. The ball arcs through air that remembers everything and forgets nothing. Trees sway gently, indifferent witnesses to each swing and misstep. The earth does not care if you birdie the dog leg fifth hole or shank it OB. And in that, there is peace. Allen’s exists not in spite of the neighborhood, but within it. Children ride past on bicycles. Porch lights flicker on at dusk. And still, the course remains—not eternal, but persistent. A temporary stage where we enact small dramas, knowing they will vanish like footprints in dry grass. To walk these nine holes is to be reminded, softly and without cruelty, that nothing lasts. Not the game, not the course, not the body that swings the club. And yet we play—not to win, but to mark the time gently, with intention. For over a half of a century, in this quiet corner of Shasta County, surrounded by the ordinary, Allen’s Golf Course has not offered escape, but reflection. In its brief pause, we are reminded that even our smallest rituals are worth the breath they take, and that to play is, in its own way, to say I. Was. Here. Five stars (for simplicity and stillness in the face of suburban chaos)
