Spring Hills Golf Club: A Rustic Ohio Challenge

Clinton, Ohio, USANortheast Ohio

Spring Hills Golf Club in Clinton, Ohio, offers a straightforward 18-hole public course where natural terrain and fast greens challenge players in a rustic setting. This course favors accuracy and thoughtful play, ideal for golfers seeking a no-frills, authentic local experience.

Course Overview

Spring Hills Golf Club offers an 18-hole layout that reflects its countryside surroundings in Clinton, Ohio. This public course presents a straightforward and unpretentious golf experience, where the terrain and pace encourage players to focus on fundamentals rather than flashy design. Characterized by modest fairways often blending into the rough, the course demands accurate ball striking and thoughtful course management. The setting is rural, with tree-lined sections that provide occasional shelter and help frame each hole, while the natural undulations of the land add subtle challenges to every shot.

Golfers at Spring Hills encounter greens that are noted for their surprising speed, inviting careful reads and controlled putting strokes. This aspect of the course stands out as a consistent feature for players seeking to test their short game. However, certain amenities reflect the course’s rustic nature: fairways and tee boxes can be firm and uneven at times, and cart paths are rough or fragmented due to tree roots, encouraging a cautious approach to riding and sometimes advising players to walk over grassy areas.

The clubhouse retains a vintage character, although some updates would enhance the overall comfort. Service can vary, so players are advised to prepare for a no-frills, local atmosphere rather than expect premier country club hospitality. This course suits golfers who enjoy a down-to-earth outing in a peaceful landscape and do not seek manicured surroundings or corporate polish. As a result, Spring Hills leans toward a working-class, community-driven vibe that can appeal particularly to locals and those who value straightforward golf without distraction.

For those planning a visit, walking is possible but requires solid footwear due to the natural terrain and occasionally bumpy pathways. Tee times can be busy in the afternoons during league play, so calling ahead is recommended. While the course offers a quiet setting in rural Ohio, preparation for variable conditions will help maximize enjoyment. Spring Hills Golf Club is best seen as an accessible test of basic skills amid simple, honest terrain where players engage with the game in its raw form.

Course Highlights

Spring Hills is defined by its simple, rural layout with fast putting surfaces and a landscape that blends fairways with natural rough. The course composition highlights straightforward shot-making over architectural complexity, with certain holes framed by mature trees and gentle elevation changes that subtly influence play. The challenging greens provide a consistent test for approaches and putting, making short-game precision essential.

Called hours ahead and was told we didn’t need a tee time after 4pm. We showed up at 4:45 and asked if we could go out and he said there were leagues going on, so I simply told him what I was told on the phone. He said “nobody told you that” with an attitude like he was running a premier country club. I wouldn’t recommend coming here.

ummm. Just not a fan of Spring Hills. Its really short course and fairways are just not fairways. The rough and fairways are the same. It's early season and maybe they will improve. The greens were ok. I don't think anyone in Ohio knows what a ball mark on a green is or how to fix them!! I'm pretty sure its an Ohio thing. The staff was very nice and friendly but I just didn't care for this course.

A bit of a countrified golf course buried on some back country roads but obviously very popular with the locals. The teeing ground was a bit hard to get your tee in and the cart paths were so bumpy because of tree roots you had to use the grassy areas. The bright spot was the greens. So fast that I overputted almost every green. The clubhouse needs to be updated badly. It still has the odor of long ago cigarette smoke and no draft beer.

Unfortunately had an unpleasant time, staff attitude was very poor, made snide remarks and when questioned about the rudeness, kicked us off the property and told us not to return. Not the best experience as my first time golfing out of the military as a veteran. Wouldn’t recommend.

10/1/23 Course layout is fine, but a bit confusing. Half of the time you can't tell where the next hole starts, and you have to drive 3 holes over to find the correct teebox. Cart path is rough or non existent. Course conditions were mediocre. Fairways wéren't horrible, but the teebox and greens were a mess. Some greens were unplayable if you missed on the wrong side.(I took a picture is was so bad.) The price was just a bit too high for the quality of golf you can play. 32 for 18 is generally the sweet spot, but again, the experience left much to be desired. Probably won't be back. Nice idea of a local course, but conditions are an afterthought.
