Caledonia Golf & Fish Club
Caledonia Golf & Fish Club delivers an engaging 18-hole golf experience framed by coastal wetlands and majestic oaks. This private course blends strategic challenges with natural beauty, inviting golfers to test precision and patience across firm greens and sculpted bunkers.
Course Overview
Caledonia Golf & Fish Club presents an invigorating test of golf on the South Carolina coast, where natural beauty and thoughtful design converge. This 18-hole, private championship course offers a distinct walking experience through gently rolling terrain framed by dense stands of oak trees, lively wetlands, and an array of indigenous wildlife including alligators and herons. The course does not rely on extreme length alone; instead, it demands precision and strategic shot-making from players of varying skill levels.
Originally crafted by the renowned architect Mike Strantz, Caledonia reveals its personality with undulating fairways, firm and speedy greens, and carefully contoured bunkers. These bunkers, often positioned to challenge the approach, carve lines of defense protecting each green complex. The course encourages a thoughtful approach to each hole, where target golf reigns supreme. The abundance of natural water hazards and the surrounding marshland not only elevate the visual appeal but also call for accurate placement and calculated risk.
Though the layout will challenge low handicappers with its nuanced breaks and varied elevation changes, the course remains approachable for committed players seeking to sharpen their game. Walking Caledonia is rewarding—while the terrain is generally manageable, a few longer walks connect the holes, making comfortable footwear a necessity. The club’s embrace of the walking tradition enhances the connection to the course’s serene landscape and demands physical engagement alongside mental focus.
Facilities support a seamless round, with a welcoming pro shop and a practice green available for warm-ups and touch-ups. While no driving range exists, the course supports playing readiness through its thoughtfully positioned short game areas. Caddies play an integral role here, offering guidance across the course’s many subtle challenges.
Combining coastal marshland beauty, precise architectural challenges, and a strong walking ethic, Caledonia Golf & Fish Club holds a special place among South Carolina’s finest golf experiences. Its unique character and gently shifting moods invite players to engage fully, rewarding those who commit with rounds remembered long after the final putt.
Course Highlights
Designed by Mike Strantz, this course features signature undulating greens and bunkers that demand strategic approaches, alongside rich coastal wetlands that bring wildlife close to the fairways. The unique use of decoy duck tee markers adds character without compromising clarity. The absence of a driving range is offset by a well-maintained practice green and chipping areas.

If you’re down in Myrtle Beach looking to play some golf, do yourself a favor and play here! Easily the best course in the area. From the architecture, to the conditions, to the staff, the whole experience is great! You would be doing yourself a disservice by skipping this gem. They even offer an e-bike instead of the standard golf cart if you’re feeling adventurous. It was an experience I will never forget and I will 100% be back whenever I visit the area again.

Tee boxes are ducks. If you are colorblind, you will struggle with these tee markers at a glance, be sure to check with your playing mates! Course is exceptionally scenic. Plenty to test the avid golfer. Plenty of scenery. Alligators, birds, turtles, herons, and fish can be seen aplenty. Greens play semi firm and quick. Target golf is required with length to score due to tee box setups, and overall yardage. When you think of South Carolina golf, it's not hard to imagine Caledonia.

We had a great time playing the course on January 12, 2025. It’s a great walker’s course, with not too many long walks between holes (although there are a few). The fairways and tee boxes were over seeded but the tips were not for some reason. The greens were nice and rolling around 11-12 and true. The bunkers were in good shape with a good amount of sand. I didn’t get to try any of the food, but what I saw coming out of the kitchen looked really good. The pro shop was nice and the staff was friendly. There’s no driving range, but there’s a practice green and a few flags to chip at. I definitely want to try to get out here again in the spring.

Really nice course with a beautiful layout. Not sharing pictures because everything from the drive into the course until the final approach on 18 should be experienced in person. The course played beautifully, is really well kept, and the greens rolled true. The staff is absolutely wonderful! My only suggestion is to continually raking the bunkers! I know it's probably tough with the summer thunderstorms but a few need better drainage and/or need to be raked more frequently by the crew. Pace was a smidge slow but I'm not going to complain with the beautiful scenery and how enjoyable it was to play this course. Other than that, this is an A+ course.

I love Mike Strantz and from my understanding this was his first solo golf course! I Don't think I'm going out on a limb. when I say in golf course architecture he was an extremist. people tried to temper him down but never really worked! you either loved him or you did not like his courses. I personally absolutely loved it then again, Caledonia was a humbling experience and one of the worst rounds of golf I've had in years can't blame him though even though he made it far more daunting than I would have liked aesthetically. it's an absolutely beautiful golf course. just doesn't suit my game as well as some of his others like bulls Bay or his sister course across the street. true blue which I prefer! that being said, you definitely need to check this one off your list. the conditions are flawless and The teebox markers are decoy ducks. I mean seriously. how cool is that!
