Grand Lake Golf Course

Grand Lake, Colorado, USAMountain West Colorado

Grand Lake Golf Course combines a challenging links-style layout with breathtaking mountain views. At an elevation of 8,500 feet, this public 18-hole course tests precision and course management amid ever-changing alpine winds and terrain.

Course Overview

Located in the high mountain town of Grand Lake, Colorado, Grand Lake Golf Course offers an 18-hole experience that challenges golfers while treating them to dramatic alpine vistas. This public course carries a distinct links-style influence, shaped by the natural contours of its elevated setting at roughly 8,500 feet above sea level. The layout demands thoughtful shot-making, with tee boxes perched on slopes that reveal sweeping views of the surrounding wilderness and burning scars from past wildfires, an honest reminder of nature's enduring presence.

Fairways vary between generous openings and narrow corridors lined by resilient pines, requiring precise drives and well-planned approaches. The greens reward commitment, often presenting blind shots or strategic undulations where subtly reading breaks can make all the difference. Individual holes encourage golfers to think carefully about club selection, especially when wind sweeps down the course, putting a premium on tempo and trajectory.

Players of all levels find something to enjoy here. While the championship tees test accuracy and length, forward tees provide a more manageable distance without sacrificing the quality of the experience. Helpful hints on scorecards assist in navigating tricky sections, making the layout approachable without losing its competitive edge.

The practice facilities include a driving range with elevated stations and a putting green designed for pre-round preparation. Though the range occasional closures due to maintenance can impact warm-up opportunities, the attentive staff ensures a welcoming atmosphere that eases any rough edges.

Grand Lake Golf Course operates as a public venue where the friendly, knowledgeable crew contributes significantly to the relaxed yet professional vibe. Golfers are encouraged to plan visits around weather patterns to make the most of this high-altitude challenge. Solid footwear and layered clothing are practical for shifting conditions, while patience with occasional wind and course quirks enhances the visit.

The setting blends rugged mountain character with thoughtful design, creating an experience that asks players to engage both physically and mentally. Grand Lake is more than a round of golf; it is a chance to measure a game against one of Colorado’s distinctive landscapes.

Amazing sledding hill! Fun for the whole family. It’s free and they even provide tubes but also allow you to bring your own sleds. Their hot chocolate in the clubhouse is the best.

I have been skiing here for over 40 years, and since Janice left it has gotten progressively worse every season. I have been given every excuse in the book as to why it’s been bad… wind, no trees, groomer is broken, employees are sick. I understand that since the fire there have been new challenges, but in 4 seasons I have seen no effort to mitigate the issues or upgrade the area. Wind fences could be used to help with drift and protect the groomed trails. If the groomer has been limping along for two years, as the employee told me, why is it not in the budget to fix and/or replace it? The prices have gone up the last 3 years, and as a local, who pay taxes to the rec district, I have seen zero effort in making upgrades. They have also hosted no events or races to try to bring in any new income for the Nordic season to help with budget shortfalls. It appears to me that all the money brought in from the Nordic Center goes to golf maintenance. That brings me to the grooming practices. They groom the trails between 7-10 am in the morning. This means that the trails are always soft because the grooming never gets a chance to freeze and set overnight. So the best time to ski is at 6 am before they churn up all the snow. They also do two passes on the skate tracks leaving a soft sinkhole in the middle of the track that sucks your skis in and can be dangerous. For the prices they are charging, I expect better attention to detail. I miss how well this Nordic Area used to be maintained.

Great place to have a drink and some grub! I’m very pro “watching moose chase golfers” and this place just does it for me.

Day two of a two-day golf trip and we could not have ended it on a better course in the area. Grand Lake Golf Course is a links style course with spectacular views in spite of the burned trees from previous fires. Some holes have wide fairways, others not so much. This course will make you think about your drive and your approach if you play the tees appropriate for your handicap. I liked the helpful hints for each hole on the scorecard. Staff was friendly and the pace of play was better than expected. The only area for improvement is to have a Ranger on the course ensuring pace of play; otherwise, great course.

Tee to Green is challenging from the tips, but trust yourself. Highest elevation is 8,550 on a par 3. Elevated tee boxes, blind green shoots, decent driving range and putting green, very narrow, breakfast and cart girls only on the weekends. Make sure you know when they are cutting grass on the range because they closed the range the day we went and that definitely made the day a lot tougher without a warm up. Some greens weren’t looking to best, sandy or seedy. Views were fantastic but we had to look passed all the burn, very happy this course didn’t get touched by the fires a few years back.
